The Sacramento Public Library is seeking an energetic, strategic and tactical thinker to serve as Assistant Director -- Public Services. This individual will collaborate with other managers and staff to shape and implement the goals of the Library and engage the community. The Assistant Director – Public Services will participate extensively in system-wide initiatives, represent the Library to the public, and lead efforts to create excellent and engaging experiences through the design and delivery of outstanding public services.

The Assistant Director of Public Services reports to the Library Director, but will work closely with the Deputy Library Director and the Assistant Director for Infrastructure in providing vision and leadership. This individual will oversee, guide and direct managers who are responsible for the development and delivery of system-wide programs and services in the areas of youth and literacy services, branch services, outreach, programming and the Central Library, as well as serving an essential role in developing the Library’s new strategic plan. The Assistant Director of Public Services will also oversee, guide and direct staff on standards of public service, including the evaluation of the effectiveness of system-wide programs, services and events.

Sacramento Public Library is the fourth largest library system in California, serving 1.4 million residents in Sacramento County, including the incorporated cities of Citrus Heights, Elk Grove, Galt, Isleton, Rancho Cordova and Sacramento.  The system is a Joint Powers Authority, governed by a 15-member board comprised of elected officials from each of the member jurisdictions, with representation based on each jurisdiction’s population.  The Authority operates 28 libraries, including the Central Library in downtown Sacramento, has nearly 300 staff members, a collection of 2 million volumes and an annual budget of $36 million. More than 700,000 residents have library cards and 8 million items are circulated annually. The Library welcomes more than 4 million visitors annually.

 

EXPERIENCE

Seven years (7) experience as a librarian is required. Five (5) years in a supervisor/manager capacity is required. Experience in library public service is required and management experience in an urban public library is preferred.

 

EDUCATION

Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association (ALA)-accredited college or university is required.

 

Salary Range: $85,170 - $132,159/annually 

Salary placement based upon qualifications and experience.
