JOB SUMMARY:
The Librarian (Patient Education) provides direct information support for patients, family members and clinical educators; attending rounds, training patients in effective searching and evaluation of credible health information sources, performing mediated searches, keeping clinical educator teams up to date with current awareness of evidence-based patient education materials and evaluating new resources for addition to the Patient Resource Center (PRC) website. The Librarian (Patient Education) ensures that quality library services are provided in an efficient, safe and culturally competent manner, consistent with the unit's standards.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES::
  • Develops and finalizes area specific patient education information services to ensure patient resource center service activation.
  • Assists in developing and implementing policies and procedures in assigned library service area(s) to outline how the patient education librarian will interact operationally with Sidra multidisciplinary clinical teams (e.g. attending rounds to provide info to patients)
  • Proactively provides information services related to patient education, in addition to providing information to support continuing education for Sidra clinical educators and customized provision of patient education information to specific groups or individuals.
  • Validates and updates patient resource center collection lists for relevant specialty clinical areas and consumer health topics.
  • Develops content and author library components of curriculum for both the corporate and clinical orientation programs and collaborates on the development of assessment tools.
  • Selects library resources appropriate for the support of the organization's vision, mission and guiding principles.
  • Provides orientation to all clinical education staff during on-boarding on the effective use of patient resource center resources.
  • Accountable for the efficiency and quality of patient education information services provided and for professional practice in accordance with Sidra policies and procedures
  • Reports unit activities, progress and potential problems to the Director – Library Services.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE::
 
ESSENTIAL:
  • Master's degree in library and/or information studies from an American Library Association accredited institution or equivalent.
  • 5 years of professional library experience, including at least 2 years within a medical/life sciences library.
  • Demonstrated familiarity (knowledge and skills) with current technology related to information services.
  • Experience in organizing data and generating thorough, accurate and timely reports.
  • Effective planning and organizing with the ability to exercise discretion, attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Expert searching skills; experience searching MEDLINEplus, WebMD or equivalent and consumer health resources.
  • Demonstrated creativity and innovation in teaching, and the integration of technology into teaching and providing library services.
  • Demonstrated ability in developing and delivering library instruction; strong group presentation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of library users – patients and their family members, clinical educators, students (from affiliated institutions), administrators and staff.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Demonstrates fiscal responsibility in the use of all resources.
  • Seeks opportunities to enable lifelong learning, through participating in educational activities appropriate to the area of specialization; maintaining required level of competence and professional portfolio.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite.
PREFERRED:
  • International experience.
  • Experience meeting the information needs of patients and clinical educators.
  • Experience with mobile applications relevant to consumer health information services.
  • Understanding of and enthusiasm for evidence-based practice.
  • Interest in contributing to the profession via research, publication, presentation and service (within associations).
  • Initiative and flexibility to adapt and work in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Arabic language skills
