Archives and Special Collections Metadata Librarian


The University of Minnesota Libraries seeks an energetic, innovative, service-oriented and collaborative professional to serve as Archives and Special Collections Metadata Librarian. The ideal candidate provides intellectual access for materials held in the various units of the Archives and Special Collections Department and in digital repositories, by performing original and complex copy cataloging using descriptive standards such as Resource Description and Access (RDA), Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials (DCRM), and Describing Archives: a Content Standard (DACS), and utilizing a variety of encoding standards such as MARC, Dublin Core, MODS and Encoded Archival Description (EAD).  Metadata librarians work with the Head of Cataloging and Metadata Services in coordinating metadata projects, training and mentoring support staff within the unit, and writing documentation. The position may also assist with high priority original cataloging for the general collections, particularly serial materials, as needed. The librarian will also contribute to the profession through research, publication, and professional engagement, as he or she works toward continuous appointment status. This position reports to the Head of Cataloging and Metadata Services in the Data Management & Access Department.


Required Qualifications include an American Library Association accredited Master’s degree in Library/Information Science or equivalent combination of advanced degree and relevant experience, and one to three years original cataloging experience, applying current standards and systems including AACR2, RDA, Library of Congress Classification, Library of Congress Subject Headings, and OCLC Connexion and library management and discovery systems.
