The University of Kansas Libraries seeks a dynamic, innovative and collaborative individual to join the Office of Scholarly Communication and Copyright. This individual will work with faculty, staff, and students to convey an understanding of the changing modes of scholarly communication, open access and copyright issues, and scholarly publishing.
About the KU Libraries' Office of Scholarly Communication & Copyright
The KU Libraries' Office of Scholarly Communication & Copyright (OSC&C) assists faculty and students to share their scholarly work using complementary online tools like KU ScholarWorks, to manage the complex copyrights associated with those works and the works of other scholars and to learn more about the shifting system of scholarly communication in which they are major stakeholders. The KU Faculty Open Access Policy (revised and passed the faculty senate on February 11, 2010) is a mechanism that asserts the rights of KU faculty to provide broad, free access to their journal publications to colleagues around the world.

Job Description
The Scholarly Communications Librarian is a member of the Office of Scholarly Communication and Copyright in the Libraries Research and Learning Division. Reporting to the Head of the Office, the incumbent works closely with others in the Libraries and the University community and actively promotes author rights, as well as those of the creators, disseminators, and users of scholarly information, under fair use. In collaboration with colleagues, the Scholarly Communications Librarian assists in the promotion of the University's institutional repository and open access initiatives, seeking to build a sustainable program of outreach, consultation, and guidance on author rights, copyright and scholarly publishing issues.
70% Professional Responsibilities
* Partners in the development and delivery of internal Libraries programming to raise the understanding and expertise of library staff related to scholarly communications, copyright, open access, and scholarly publishing.
* Participates in active outreach to increase awareness among faculty, researchers, and students about scholarly communication issues including altmetrics.
* Develops and maintains tools, resources, and education programs to increase awareness of scholarly communication issues, such as publishing options, agency specific requirements, author rights, and copyright/fair use concerns.
* Participates in campus and national initiatives on open access and scholarly publishing and collaborates with colleagues to build relationships with campus constituents related to scholarly communications; assessment of scholarly communication efforts and campus needs.
* Participates in the development of guidelines, policies, and best practices for the institutional repository and open access initiatives, and advocates for deposit of scholarly content in the repository.
* Monitors legislative requirements, practices, and standards pertaining to scholarly communications by government agencies, academic libraries, and interest groups, and disseminates information broadly.
* In collaboration with library colleagues, monitors scholarly activities in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences fields and prepares communication tools for those constituencies.
* Participates in current and developing initiatives that encourage and enable scholars to manage their own copyright and improve the economics of and access to published research.
* Serves as a key resource for queries on copyright compliance and fair use pertaining to library collections and instruction
* Actively communicate issues implicit in scholarly communication and open access in discussions with colleagues and with the KU community. Attends training and events designed and developed to promote understanding of trends and best practices in scholarly communications. Reflects this understanding in his or her work as a librarian at KU.
* Actively participate in, and advocates for, the educational role of the Libraries through dynamic engagement in campus teaching and research, campus collaborations, or staff development and training. Identifies and makes use of teaching opportunities in any circumstance, promotes the Libraries instructional resources and support, and obtains instructional expertise from colleagues as appropriate.
* Contributes to other duties related to instructional and faculty support programs of the Research and Learning Division.
20% Research
Contributes to the profession's collective knowledge by engaging in scholarly research activity. Research may involve the publication of articles, books, book reviews, grant-supported inquiry or editorial work.
10% Service
Engages in service to the Libraries, the University and to professional organizations by participating in committee work, projects, and other contributory achievements.
Required Qualifications
1. ALA accredited MLS or equivalent from a foreign institution by date of appointment.
2. One year experience planning and delivering workshops, presentations, or class instruction for academic audiences.
3. Effective written communication skills in English as demonstrated by the candidate's application materials, examples of written work and/or publications.
Preferred Qualifications
1. Experience working in an academic library or research institution.
2. Experience supporting, promoting or advocating for scholarly communication and open access issues.
3. Demonstrated experience collaborating with faculty and other stakeholders.
4. Demonstrated ability to manage and complete projects.
5. Excellent analytical, organizational, and time management skills.
6. Ability to work independently and as a team member in a dynamically changing team environment.
