We are currently looking to fill several information technology-related positions, many of which will be dedicated to new and exciting initiatives related to accessibility, student engaged learning, and visualization.
Technology professionals at the University of Michigan build tools to help researchers find information in a vast array of online resources; build the systems and processes that underlie HathiTrust (one of the world's biggest digital libraries); coordinate electronic publishing and data archiving initiatives; and support the traditional library services users rely on, such as resource discovery, book circulation, and collection management. We are a group of professionals working to reimagine the research library in the digital age, transforming the way libraries organize, preserve, and share access to knowledge.

Project focus: Accessibility
Accessibility Specialist (Job ID: 107211)
This position will collaborate and lead the development of the library's strategy for accessibility in the fields of digital media and research, teaching and learning.
Duties include exploring current trends, benchmarking best practices, fostering internal and external partnerships, identifying key accessibility issues when adopting technologies, developing evaluation criteria specific to library decision-making, articulating risk factors, outlining strategic options, training, and articulating needed capabilities in a digital era. Expected outcomes include collaborations, white papers, and presentations informing the library as we continue to make an investment in accessibility.
The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated knowledge of current accessibility laws (e.g., Section 504 and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act) and standards (e.g., W3C WCAG 2.0), and experience with assistive technology such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and Window Eyes, as well as accessibility features in Windows and Mac; familiarity with commercial web accessibility evaluation and reporting tool.
User Experience Specialist (two positions) (Job ID: 105833)
The library is seeking two talented and enthusiastic User Experience (UX) Specialists to support the design and usability of the library's websites and applications. Ideal candidates will be creative thinkers and problem solvers and have a passion for understanding users in the context of higher education.
Experience designing or evaluating library websites or other complex, data-rich websites, especially discovery and delivery applications for images, video, structured text, data, and other complex objects is desired.
Responsibilities included gathering requirements by consulting stakeholders, investigating user needs and assessing current interfaces; helping support web content projects by assessing and improving existing content, identifying new content needs, creating user-friendly content, developing guidelines, and informing priorities; creating wireframes, mockups, personas, use cases, and user journeys, to support the design process. Come be part of the library's dedicated user experience team that works collaboratively to focus on the interface design, user research/usability, and content strategy needs for the library's primary interfaces.
Interface Developer (Job ID: 105834)
We're looking for a talented and enthusiastic front-end developer whose primary responsibility will be the implementation and management of interfaces to the library's digital content management and presentation systems.
The ideal candidate will have a passion for developing accessible interfaces to web resources, bring a clear sense of design to the job, and strong problem-solving skills. Extensive knowledge of HTML5, CSS, JQuery, and JavaScript are needed. A demonstrated familiarity with applying WCAG 2.0 accessibility standards is desired.
This position will collaborate with the library's application developers and content owners, build discovery and access web applications for the digital library, content management systems, the library catalog, online exhibit tools, and others to customize and enhance functionality of the sites.
Project focus: Visualization
Visualizations Systems Specialist (Job ID: 105835)
Visualization plays a critical role in communicating complex concepts and supporting productive interpretation of large volumes of information in the creation of new knowledge. As the library continues offering and developing services around the research life-cycle including the creation, analysis, and the curation of data, the need for more comprehensive technical expertise and support for data visualization has emerged on multiple levels.
The visualization systems specialist will be an integral member of a library-wide team focused on visualization services and will be responsible for managing the integration of new tools and libraries on the platform that will be a robust dual-booted Linux/Windows system and leading the technical iteration of these systems.
The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of common end-user visualization tools and platforms. (e.g. VisIt, Visualization Toolkit, Paraview, MatLab, ANSYS, R, Cytoscape, Ruby, C/C++, OpenGL/DirectX and Python) and the ability to effectively transfer knowledge through consultations, workshops, courses, one-on-one, and online training mediums.
Project focus: Academic Publishing
Electronic Publishing Programmer (Job ID: 105906)
We're seeking an electronic publishing programmer to design, build, and maintain systems in support of new models in academic publishing. The ideal candidate for this two-year position will possess a strong knowledge of object-oriented programming languages, web frameworks, and current best practices in code design and web technologies, as well as a passion for progressive web development, automated text processing, data mining, and information retrieval.
Experience with Ruby on Rails, JRuby, Git, MySQL, JQuery, XSLT, Perl, PHP, RESTful APIs, and test-driven development is a plus. We are looking for developers who are engaged with project goals, who thrive on interaction with users and stakeholders, and who want to shape and build the future of scholarly publishing.
Project focus: Digital Preservation
Project Manager (Job ID: 10606)
The library is seeking a librarian to be a project manager and specialist in the area of digital preservation services.
The successful candidate for this two-year position will work as part of a team of programmers, librarians, and other experts on a major initiative to build a new digital library system architecture.
Responsibilities will include coordination of activities among project participants, data analysis and workflow design, metadata policy and schema design, and familiarity with relevant preservation tools, systems, and services that are relevant to the work at hand and of interest to the organization. Knowledge and experience in the management, conversion, and digital preservation of archival materials is desired.
Application Programmers/Analysts (two positions): (Job ID:106084)
We're seeking two skilled programmers to help create digital library systems and build efficient, automated workflows.
The successful candidates for these three-year positions will work as part of a team of programmers, librarians, and other experts on a major initiative to build a new digital library system architecture and populate it with new forms of content. The new system will make use of recent developments in the open source community and will handle a wide array of materials: video, music, research data sets, historical records, and more. Duties will include analyzing business and user needs and design solutions involving computer systems and software; developing and maintaining complex software systems; configuring and customizing open source software and engaging in collaborative development activity.
Demonstrated programming skills in a modern programming language. Experience with JRuby, Rails, MySQL, Perl, REST, XML and related technologies (ideally, for building data-driven web-based applications and data handling routines) is desired. This is an opportunity to join a skilled and forward-thinking group and to gain experience with modern technologies that support web-based research and archiving.
