Head of Information and Delivery Services

 

Job Purposes:

 

To direct the operation of the Information Delivery Services Department at the University Libraries, including circulation, interlibrary loan, reserves, media booking, off-site storage preparation and stack maintenance (materials lending, borrowing, control, inventory, and repair). To hire, supervise, schedule, train, evaluate and develop staff. To set, coordinate and maintain departmental goals, policies and procedures. To monitor developments in automated circulation and document delivery systems. To prepare departmental reports and assess statistical changes

 

Essential Functions and percent of time:

 

70% Supervision and Management:


Directs the operation of the Information Delivery Services Department at the University Libraries, including circulation, interlibrary loan, reserves, media booking, off-site storage preparation and stack maintenance (materials lending, borrowing, control, inventory, and repair). Hires, supervises, schedules, trains, evaluates and develops staff.

Sets, coordinates and maintains departmental goals, policies, procedures and workflow. Sets objectives, policies, rules, practices, methods, standards and schedules. Monitors developing technologies and makes recommendations for purchase. Implements new technologies and services. Approves exceptions. Collects, analyzes and reports statistical information. Prepares monthly and annual reports. Monitors the condition of the library facilities and initiates repair requests. Configures staffing to ensure service 98.5 hours per week.

15% Administers and provides user services:

Mediates and reconciles user complaints and requests. Interprets library policy and procedure. Promotes departmental services. Serves as a backup for the duties of most staff in the Information Delivery Services department especially circulation, reserve and interlibrary loan services. Troubleshoots library equipment including computers, photocopiers, printers, scanners and peripherals before initiating repair requests.

15% Collaborates with others:

Represents the libraries on local, regional and state committees. Coordinates circulation and ILL services with 7 affiliated hospital libraries, the Lake Campus Library and the Educational Resource Center. Reviews changes proposed by other university and library units which impact departmental workflow. Serves on the Libraries’ Management Advisory Council. Collaborates with faculty to provide library services for distance education students.

Required Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited library school
• Two years of experience working with library circulation, electronic reserves, media booking, and stack maintenance
• One year of interlibrary loan experience using OCLC borrowing and lending software
• Two years of library supervisory experience
• Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills
• Excellent organizational and human relations skills

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with ILLiad, DOCLINE and Odyssey software (in addition to required experience using OCLC interlibrary loan software)
• Experience with other automated library systems in public services, especially III Sierra software and ARES course reserve software
• Experience with a variety of computer applications, such as Microsoft Office
