E-Resources and Acquisitions Librarian Technical Services (Full-time, ongoing)

The University of British Columbia Library is one of the largest academic libraries in Canada, ranked 14th among the Association of Research Libraries.  The Library consistently ranks among the top university research libraries in North America. UBC Library has 14 branches and divisions, two campuses (Vancouver and Kelowna), one off-site hospital library, and the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre - a multi-purpose teaching and learning facility. 


The Library's collection of over 7M items includes 1.4M ebooks, 229,020 electronic journals, 850,000 maps, audio, DVD/video and graphic materials, and 1, 703 bibliographic and fulltext databases.  


More than 300 knowledgeable employees – librarians, management and professional staff, support staff and student staff – provide users with the excellent resources and services that they need to further their research, teaching and learning. 


The Technical Services Department is a centralized unit that performs and provides a wide range of "behind the scenes" activities and services to the entire UBC library system. The department is responsible for the acquisitions, cataloguing and processing of all library materials. The department's other major focus is on providing and managing electronic resources (e-journals, e-books, databases, etc.) to the library and the campus community. Overview of the position: 


Within a team environment, the E-Resources and Acquisitions Librarian is responsible for providing leadership in the acquisition, licensing and access of library materials in all formats, whether acquired independently by UBC Library or collectively by consortia such as CRKN, COPPUL, BCELN and others.


        Ensures consistent and integrated access to all resources in a technology-intensive materials management and learning environment.

        Works collaboratively with Library colleagues to maintain and upgrade existing systems and to evaluate and when necessary acquire new acquisitions, ERM and discovery systems.

        Administers and oversees access and troubleshooting for e-resources and the licensing permissions for access and use of e-resources.

        Provides support and leadership to subject specialists on matters of resource renewals and the licensing of new e-resources.

        Contributes to qualitative assessment activities, manages and analyzes usage statistics and prepares management reports to ensure timely collections decision-making.

        Provides leadership and strategy for the evaluation of library acquisitions. 


Qualifications: 


Required:


        Graduate degree from an accredited program in Library and Information Science.

        Four or more years of professional experience managing serial, electronic resource and monographic acquisitions at increasing levels of responsibility.

        Extensive knowledge and understanding of issues and practices related to scholarly publishing, library acquisitions, licensing, collection analysis and usage trends, management and e-resource preservation.

        Experience and understanding of open URL resolver management, current web tools, discovery layers and next generation library and ERM systems.

        Demonstrable, superior communication and training skills including staff management, vendor negotiations, strategic planning and customer service within the organization.

        Well-developed skills in gathering and displaying quantitative information.

        Ability to work independently, collaboratively with various groups and teams inside and outside the Library and flexibly to adjust priorities in a dynamic academic and technological environment.

        Ability to manage tasks in response to varying time pressures with shifting priorities and changing constraints.

        Experience supervising staff.

        Experience working in a distributed academic library environment. 


Preferred:


        Experience with project management and with providing or managing statistical analysis regarding collections, resource usage and expenditures.

        Experience with collections materials budget management and statistical tools.

        Experience with Ex Libris ILS (Voyager) and Serial Solutions ERM.

        Experience working with major vendors, including EBSCO, YBP and ProQuest.  

 

Working Relationships 


Reports to the Head, Technical Services and works closely with the AUL, Collections Management. Works in a team environment with librarians and staff in Technical Services. Works collaboratively with other Technical Services librarians in developing, refining and implementing policies and workflows. Works collaboratively with librarians and staff in branch libraries as well as with individuals and groups in other organizations. Hires, trains and supervises unionized staff (CUPE 2950) and management-and-professional staff (AAPS). May supervise student hourly workers. 


Terms of Appointment and Salary:  


This position will be filled as a full time ongoing position. If eligible and qualified, the successful applicant may be appointed with a confirmed appointment. Otherwise, there will be an initial three-year probationary appointment.  Normally, such an appointment is reviewed by the end of the second year of appointment, and a recommendation is made at that time to grant or not to grant a confirmed appointment.  


Salary will be commensurate with experience and academic/professional qualifications.
