The Indiana University Bloomington (IUB) Libraries seek a dynamic, innovative, and collegial individual to serve as Education and Outreach Librarian in the Public Services Department of the Lilly Library.

 

Founded in 1820, Indiana University Bloomington has grown from a small state seminary into the flagship campus of a great public university with over 42,000 students and almost 3,000 faculty. Innovation, creativity, and academic freedom are hallmarks of IU Bloomington and its world-class contributions in research and the arts. The campus covers over 1,800 wooded acres and is distinctive for both its park-like beauty and an architectural heritage inspired by local craftsmanship in limestone.

 

The IUB Libraries (http://www.libraries.iub.edu) are among the leading academic research library systems in North America, having recently been named the top university library by the Association of College and Research Libraries. The IUB Libraries provide strong collections, quality service and instructional programs, and leadership in the application of information technologies. The collections support every academic discipline on campus and include more than 6.6 million books, journals, maps, films, and audio/visual materials in over 900 languages. Users can access more than 400 databases, 43,000 electronic journals, and 224,000 electronic books, as well as locally developed digital content.

 

The IUB Libraries are active members of regional and national associations and consortia including the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), the Digital Library Federation (DLF), and is a founding member of HathiTrust, a shared digital repository. IU is the principal investigator for Kuali Open Library Environment (OLE) and is working with academic library partners to develop a next generation open source library management system.

 

The Lilly Library (http://www.indiana.edu/~liblilly/) is the rare books, manuscripts, and special collections library of the Indiana University Libraries, Bloomington.  The Lilly Library’s holdings include about 400,000 books, approximately 150,000 pieces of sheet music, and more than 7.5 million manuscripts in more than 1700 discreet collections.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the Associate Director and Head of Lilly Library Public Services:

·         Provide leadership and direction in the design, delivery, and assessment of innovative methods of teaching with special collections for the Public Services Department. In collaboration with other members of the Public Services Department, provide high quality instruction using special collections materials to diverse audiences, principally undergraduate and graduate students.

·         Collaborate with faculty and other library and campus partners to develop innovative teaching strategies utilizing information technologies and special collections materials.

·         Develop and maintain knowledge of information literacy standards, instructional practice, teaching methodologies, instructional tools, etc.

·         In collaboration with Head of Public Services, develop and coordinate outreach initiatives and public programs to strengthen relationships with campus academic programs and further establish the Lilly Library as a center for excellence in research, teaching, and learning with special collections.

·         In collaboration with Head of Public Services, manage Lilly Library social media and related communications

·         Provide reference services for specialized areas and on a back-up basis, including weekends.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

·         Master’s degree in Library and/or Information Science from an ALA-accredited graduate program

·         Minimum one year full-time experience providing public services in a special collections repository to a diverse clientele including faculty, undergraduate and graduate students

·         Demonstrated experience teaching with special collections and commitment to promoting the appreciation and use of special collections materials to a variety of audiences

·         Understanding of the significance of original artifacts and the nature and value of primary materials for learning, teaching, research, and outreach

·         Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with library and campus colleagues

·         Broad general knowledge in the humanities

·         Reading ability in Spanish, French, German, Italian, or Latin

·         Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal communication skills

·         Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe CS, social media applications, and other common technologies used in academic libraries

·         Must be able to meet the requirements of a tenure-track librarian position

Preferred

·         Additional graduate degree in a discipline related to the collections of the Lilly Library

·         Knowledge of instructional design, pedagogy, and assessment principles for effective instruction

·         Knowledge of the history of the book and the book arts and of the methods and materials that have been used to create and disseminate archival and non-print materials

·         Knowledge of the basic history, theory, and professional practices relating to materials generally found in special collections research libraries, including but not limited to rare books, maps, prints, photographs, ephemera, archives, manuscripts, original artwork, audiovisual media, and digital materials
