Job Description

The Mansfield Library at The University of Montana invites applications for a tenure-track Social Sciences Librarian, Assistant Professor beginning August 2013. The Social Sciences Librarian provides research assistance services for The University of Montana faculty, students, and staff, offered within the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library and virtually; partners with faculty to incorporate curriculum-based research and information literacy activities into courses; designs library instruction sessions for students and faculty in the social science disciplines; and develops new models and programs to support research and the educational mission of the University. Active engagement in the library profession as a whole is encouraged and supported.

The successful candidate will:

·     Deliver instruction within the mission of The University of Montana to further integrate information literacy instruction as an integral part of the higher education experience

·     Assist faculty in developing library assignments that contribute to student learning outcomes for their programs

·     Promote awareness of library services and programs to the liaison departments and keep the library informed of departmental programs

·     Provide specialized social science reference on demand and participate as a reference team member, providing user-centered general reference assistance with both traditional and electronic information resources

·     Provide on-going continuing education for reference team members, and may be required to provide day, evening and weekend reference desk and instruction work

·     Participate in collection development and liaison activities with assigned departments that could include, but will not necessarily be limited to, the following disciplines: Communication Studies, Economics, Geography, Political Science, Social Work, and Sociology

·     Keep abreast of trends in instructional design and its application to teaching in the social science disciplines

·     Develop library services related to the use of data sets in the social sciences

Required Experience

·     ALA-Accredited Master’s degree in library or information science, completed by the time of hiring

·     Academic degree or experience in the social sciences

·     Excellent interpersonal communication, presentation, and organization skills

·     Capable of working constructively, creatively, and energetically both independently and in a collaborative, collegial environment

·     Strong commitment to user-focused services

·     Strong commitment to diversity

·     Strong knowledge of and recent experience with traditional and electronic reference sources

·     Ability to assume multiple responsibilities in a rapidly changing environment

·     Potential for achieving tenure and promotion as outlined in the Library’s Unit Standards

Preferred Qualifications:

·     Experience in instruction and research support in an academic library

·     Experience in liaison responsibilities

·     Working knowledge of statistical software packages such as SPSS

·     Experience using data sets in the social sciences

Salary and benefits:

Minimum Salary: $44,815.00 Annually
