Carnegie Mellon University invites applications for a full-time Director of the Library at its Qatar campus in Doha, Qatar, http://www.qatar.cmu.edu/. This is a twelve-month, non- tenure track faculty appointment (http://www.cmu.edu/policies/documents/Librarian.html). Term of the initial appointment is three years.

 

The Director of the library is responsible for planning and managing all aspects of the Carnegie Mellon University—Qatar Library;  for providing a wide range of library services and resources to support the students and faculty in the programs offered at the Qatar campus; and for hiring and supervision of library personnel both support staff and a reference/instruction librarian. The director of the library reports to the Associate Dean for Education at the Qatar campus and the Associate Dean of Libraries in Pittsburgh. The Director is expected to participate in professional development activities and may serve in library or institutional committees as elected or assigned.

 

Essential to this position are a demonstrated commitment to collaboration, to public service and to teaching; outstanding verbal and written communication skills in English, including public presentation skills. Creativity and attentiveness to interacting with students, faculty and staff with diverse backgrounds, cultures, and learning styles is essential.

Minimum Qualifications:

·         Education: Please note that an ALA-accredited MLS or ALA-recognized international equivalent is the required minimum education. Equivalent experience is not a substitute for the minimum degree requirement.

·         Experience: Three to five years experience in managing library operations. Demonstrated experience in managing personnel and projects.

·         Skills: Ability to work positively with diverse constituencies in an environment of rapid change. Outstanding communication, organizational and interpersonal skills. Ability to plan, implement, meet deadlines and to juggle multiple tasks and priorities.

·         Mental: Strong commitment to organizational excellence and public service. Ability to remain calm and composed when dealing with difficult situations or people, including employee relationships; ability to remain calm in a crisis situation; ability to organize work; ability to prioritize work; ability to persuade; ability to effectively negotiate; ability to maintain confidentiality;

·         Other: This position requires a background check.

Preferred Qualifications:

·         Education: Second degree or coursework in a related discipline.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. In addition to the regular salary this position includes a 25% foreign assignment incentive. The University will provide housing accommodations and allowances, such as foreign station allowance, transportation, home country maintenance, home leave and relocation expenses.
