The University of Southern Mississippi Libraries seeks applications and nominations of an experienced, innovative and energetic individual for the position of Associate Dean for Research Services.  Reporting to the Dean of University Libraries, the Associate Dean for Research Services leads and coordinates all research services in the Libraries.  The incumbent will:

  • Lead and manage all aspects of the Libraries’ user services including planning, developing and coordinating the following functions: reference, instruction, outreach, information literacy, research consultations, interlibrary loan, circulation, reserves, web presence and public exhibits and events
  • Responsible for overseeing reference, circulation, and interlibrary loan units consisting of approximately 16 librarians and staff
  • Recommend, develop and implement services, policies and procedures related to the delivery of library services
  • Responsible for assessment and evaluation of library services
  • Establish and maintain clear lines of communication with administrators, faculty, students, other patrons, and professional colleagues regarding service needs
  • Strengthen the libraries’ educational programs to facilitate and support faculty research and student learning
  • Develop, lead and direct multiple user-centered modes of library service delivery
  • Coordinate user support activities with related support areas of the university (e.g., Learning Enhancement Center, Office of Student Success, Speaking and Writing Centers)
  • Integrate new technologies to further the Libraries’ service mission
  • Oversee public exhibits and events throughout the Libraries
  • Engender excellent customer service and problem solving skills in research services staff

·         Serve on the University Libraries’ Executive Cabinet participating in strategic planning and evaluation of library services and resources.  Serves on  other committees within the libraries and across campus as required

Qualifications

            Required

·         MLS from an ALA-accredited institution, or international equivalent;

·         At least seven years of experience in research services in an academic or research library;

·         Demonstrated successful experience with the principles and practices of research services including assessment and data analysis;

·         Knowledge of current issues and trends at academic and research libraries including understanding of emerging information technologies and its applications for research services;

·         Supervisory experience and demonstrated ability to manage librarians and staff;

·         Understanding of teaching methods and instructional design;

·         Experience in successful budget management;

·         Excellent organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills;

·         Experience with, and ability to facilitate change;

·         Ability to work effectively and creatively in a culturally diverse, technologically complex, and rapidly changing library and university system.

 

Preferred

 

·         Substantive course work or secondary degree in an academic field;

·         Experience with Innovative Interfaces Inc. integrated library system;

·         Experience implementing innovative services, such as multi-media technology.

 

Appointment rank and salary

Rank: This is a faculty position to be hired at the associate or full professor level depending upon qualifications and experience.

Salary: Preferred hiring range is $65,000 to $80,000 depending upon qualifications and experience.
