Public Services Librarian / Middle Eastern Studies and Arabic Cataloging

 

An exceptional international opportunity awaits an innovative forward-thinking librarian at the American University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (near Dubai). As part of the Public Services Department, the successful candidate will be responsible for providing collection development for Arabic language materials and in the area of Middle Eastern Studies, liaising with the Arabic and Translation Studies program and other programs as required, as well as for providing instruction and reference.  In collaboration with librarians in the Technology and Technical Services Department, the position also catalogs and acquires Arabic language material.

 

Areas of responsibility include: serve as liaison to the Arabic and Translation Studies faculty and other programs as required; select, acquire and catalog Arabic language materials; select materials related to Middle Eastern Studies; provide reference and instruction services.

 

Required Qualifications

Master's degree in library science from an ALA-accredited school with a minimum of two years of recent experience in an academic library; fluency in Arabic language (reading, writing, speaking); excellent oral and written English language skills; strong public service orientation; commitment to working in a culturally diverse learning environment; flexibility; and excellent interpersonal and organizational skills. 

 

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to work collegially and effectively with others, solve problems, meet deadlines, and thrive in an environment of constant change; excellent communication and presentation skills are also essential.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Degree in an area related to Middle Eastern Studies; familiarity with Arabic cataloging issues (name and subject authorities, transliteration, etc.).

 

Salary and Benefits

The salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience; includes a 10% of base salary payment in lieu of retirement benefits.  Free furnished accommodation and utilities are provided along with nine weeks’ annual vacation. A self-directed benefit plan provides a variety of choices including annual air tickets to place of origin for self and family, healthcare and dependent educational allowance.  The UAE levies no income tax, however, some U.S. Federal taxes may apply to U.S. citizens and resident aliens.

The American University of Sharjah is located in the United Arab Emirates and is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Established in 1997, the university consists of four Schools and Colleges: Architecture, Art and Design, Business and Management, Engineering, and Arts and Sciences and offers undergraduate and graduate degrees to 5000 students from 80 different countries.
