Librarian: ARCHIVist- Southwestern Writers Collection

 

The Wittliff Collections in the Albert B. Alkek Library at Texas State University – San Marcos is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Librarian: Archivist - Southwestern Writers Collection (SWWC). This position reports to the Lead Archivist, SWWC and is responsible for arranging and describing collections of personal and literary papers, film, video, sound recordings, artifacts, ephemera, and other formats, providing reference assistance for the collections, managing the archives unit’s audio-visual migration activities, contributing to the department’s digital collections efforts, and overseeing the work of student workers, interns, and volunteers.

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Arrange and describe literary papers and make recommendations regarding conservation and preservation treatment of archival materials. Contribute to departmental policies and priorities for processing collections. Implement processes for effective description, access, preservation, and migration of archival audio-visual resources and digital content and coordinate policies and procedures for duplication and use of these resources. Work with Wittliff staff to create and manage digital collections. Provide reference service to patrons on-site, via phone, mail, and e-mail for the Southwestern Writers Collection, and all books, journals, videos, and other cataloged materials. Contribute to Collections newsletter, press releases, website, and other vehicles for information about the collections. Assist with Wittliff Collections tours for a wide variety of visitors including visiting writers, donors, schoolchildren, faculty, and others. Supervise SWWC interns, volunteers and/or student workers on archives projects. Assist Lead Archivist with special library projects as requested. Engage in professional activities in accordance with Texas State University’s standards for promotion for professional librarians.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Required:

 

Master’s degree from an ALA accredited program; experience organizing complex archival collections in a variety of formats and creating written guides to processed archives; knowledge of EAD, DACS and other archival standards;  experience with the migration of audio-visual archival materials from analog to digital; knowledge of archival preservation principles and practices; research and reference skills necessary to assist patrons; strong interpersonal skills;  strong verbal and written communication skills

 

Preferred:

 

Reading knowledge of Spanish; knowledge of Texas and Southwestern literature, history, art and culture

 

SALARY AND BENEFITS: $3,330 to $4,482 monthly commensurate with experience. Benefits include monthly contribution to health insurance/benefits package and retirement program. No state or local income tax.
