Job Description:
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), a nationally and internationally recognized Department of Energy research and development lab based in Washington State, has an immediate opening for a dynamic technical informationist who can make an impact in advancing science and helping solve some of the world's toughest challenges in energy, environment and national security.  PNNL is considered an employer of choice and offers excellent benefits including tuition reimbursement plans, excellent health insurance and robust relocation packages.

As a member of the PNNL Technical Library team, this position reports to the Manager of Information Services and is an active participant in the Information Services and Research Analysis (ISRA) team.  The person in this position provides professional information research services to PNNL scientists, engineers and technical support staff.  Major responsibilities and duties are aligned with the Lab's agenda, the library's mission and vision, and the ISRA team and include functional operation of the technical library, e.g., advanced information services; consultation, teaching and collaboration; marketing; and collection development.

The successful candidate must be self-motivated and possess expertise and abilities in the research of complex problems, definition of scope, identification and retrieval of needed information, and analysis and delivery of targeted results to customers; experience in information management and organization (taxonomies and metadata); successful development and deployment of teaching, training, and marketing modules and messages.  Expertise in relationship management, the ability to meet deadlines, and excellent judgment are essential.

Work contacts include the PNNL Technical Library teams and laboratory staff including management, researchers, program and operations managers, and administrative staff.  This position requires interaction and teaming with other integrated services within PNNL, including Information Release and Information Management Services.

Representative Duties & Responsibilities:
- Identify information needs and requirements of PNNL research staff
- Search for, identify, locate, analyze, and deliver scientific and technical and/or business information to researchers in support of projects
- Manage storage and access to information libraries such as EndNote, Reference Manager, and digital repositories.
- Market information services; provide support to research groups through consultation and collaboration
- Review, recommend and implement new products and advanced technologies, including social media and cutting-edge information industry offerings, for the delivery of services and to enhance researcher inquiry and productivity
- Help to design structural organization of information data sets and libraries for future retrieval and use by researchers (e-science portals, information libraries repositories)
- Conduct day-to-day operational duties for fulfilling customer requests for information and research services
- Provide customer support and solutions via email, telephone, instant messaging, twitter, SharePoint, and in person
- Develop operational procedures, processes and documentation
 
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree plus 3 years of directly related experience or advanced degree.  Intermediate position.  Augments theoretical knowledge with practical applications and working knowledge.  Knowledgeable in a primary discipline or subject area.  All staff at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory must be able to demonstrate the legal right to work in the United States.
 
Qualifications:
- 1-3 years successful experience with science/technical, social science, and business literature to fulfill information needs of researchers, competitive intelligence, and intellectual property/commercialization staff.
- 1-3 years successful experience in consultation and collaborative services for information discovery, management, and delivery; concurrent marketing of informationist services
- Knowledge of scholarly communication industry norms and practices of information technology
- 1-3 years successful experience in consultation and collaborative services for information discovery, management, and delivery; concurrent marketing of the library’s informationist services
- Demonstrated skills with advanced information literacy education and training for researchers in an ever-changing environment;  e.g., mobile devices, eportals, escience, and visualization
- Familiarity with emerging trends in social media and the information and library industry
- Experience and success in a team-oriented environment working collaboratively with co-workers and research staff

Additional beneficial skills:
- Experience in research and technical libraries
- Experience with informatics
- Experience in an applied research and development laboratory environment
- Undergraduate or graduate degree in a scientific discipline.
 
Preferred Education/Credential:
A Masters Degree in Library & Information Sciences is preferred. A Bachelors Degree in Information Management or related professional field is required.

As a member of the PNNL Technical Library team, this position reports to the Manager of Information Services and provides professional information research services to PNNL scientists, engineers and technical support staff.  Major responsibilities include leadership of the library's Electronic Resource Management team, collaboration with the Collection Management team, and active participation in the Information Services and Research Analysis team.

The successful candidate must be self-motivated and will have expertise in systems and standards in the organization of information.  The position requires demonstrated understanding of electronic resource management, experience with implementation of ERM tools such as SFX and Verde, and familiarity with next generation tools and trends in ERM; demonstrated expertise in information management and organization (taxonomies, metadata, indexing, repositories); demonstrated abilities in research of complex problems, definition of scope, identification and retrieval of needed information, and analysis and delivery of targeted results to customers.  Expertise in relationship management, the ability to meet deadlines, and excellent judgment are essential.

- Provide support and guidance to the e-resources' acquisitions process
- Identify customers' information and knowledge management needs and recommend integration of information resources and tools to support PNNL business, research projects, and technology commercialization

Qualifications:
