AKU-ISMC requires a full-time librarian who will be working in close collaboration with the library of the Institute of Ismaili Studies (IIS) in London. At present, the two Institutes (AKU-ISMC and the IIS) are in the process of amalgamating their library resources. The Institutes’ libraries provide a unique collection on Muslim cultures and history, in a range of languages to meet the teaching needs of both Institutes as well as providing a significant and distinctive scholarly research collection.
The ideal candidate will have a good knowledge and practical experience of change management within an academic library context. The AKU-ISMC librarian will report to the Aga Khan University Head Librarian in Karachi, Pakistan with a functional reporting to the Director of the Institute in London.
Main Duties:
The Librarian will be responsible for the provision and maintenance of Library services to meet the needs of the Institute’s staff, students and researchers for texts, information an audio-visual resources in printed, digital and all other forms and media. The duties will include but will not be limited to:
· Collection and resource development
· Selection, acquisition and maintenance of Library hardware and software
· Cataloguing
· Current awareness and other bibliographical services
· Cooperation with other libraries
· Management of Library staff
Requirements:
· A degree in Library / information science from an institution affiliated to an IFLA accredited Library association (post-graduate qualification preferred)
· Complete command of, and fluency in, written and spoken English, which is the working language of the Institute and the Library
· A good reading knowledge of Arabic
· An adequate reading knowledge of one or more of the following: Bengali, French, German, Malay, Persian, Russian, Spanish, Turkish or Urdu would be a distinct advantage
· Academic knowledge of Islam and Muslim civilizations, at degree level including some research
· Experience of working at a senior leveling in an academic library, including cataloguing and library management
· Experience & knowledge of International bibliographic standards (Marc, Dublin core and other metadata standards)
· Extensive knowledge and experience of print and electronic information resources in Islamic studies
· Experience and practical knowledge of information technology and database management, including integrated library management and on-line cataloguing systems
· Previous residence or extensive travel in one or more Muslim countries
· Proven fiscal and administrative management ability
