Departmental Overview

In addition to maintaining the Library's catalog OskiCat, the Catalog & Metadata Services Department is responsible for cataloging and physical treatment of all new monographs and serials in all formats and languages (except Chinese, Japanese, and Korean) for the UC Berkeley Main and subject specialty libraries.

Responsibilities

Creates and upgrades metadata/catalog records for materials in all formats. May create, upgrade, or otherwise work with non-MARC metadata for digital collections. Performs complex database maintenance by resolving conflicts, improving, or correcting bibliographic, item, holdings and/or authority records in the UCB online catalog, OskiCat. Performs problematic snag analysis for NRLF, subject specialty, and other library collections. Works with special workflows such as: analytics, replacements, and multi-volume monographs. May contribute authority records to national cooperative cataloging program and/or may perform complex authority and headings work in local database. Analyzes, evaluates, interprets, and revises or proposes revisions to established guidelines; writes documentation and provides training pertaining to unit procedures and policies. May serve as a metadata expert liaison to other Library units.

Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of and proven ability to apply/use current cataloging standards, practices, and tools for original and complex copy cataloging, including but not limited to: RDA, AACR2, MARC21 formats, Program for Cooperative Cataloging BSR and Policy Statements, Library of Congress Classification and Subject Analysis, Cataloger's Desktop, and RDA Toolkit
  • Experience using OCLC and integrated library systems, preferably Millennium.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills together with attention to detail for complex, possibly repetitive, detail-oriented work.
  • Ability to participate in multiple concurrent projects in a given timeframe, monitor project workflow, provide regular reports or updates as necessary, and meet project deadlines
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively both independently and as a team leader and member.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong service orientation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fluency in Spanish
  • Experience with serials, especially holdings statements and holdings records
  • Demonstrated ability to implement and maintain a variety of simultaneous workflows
  • Experience working with and/or creating non-MARC metadata
  • Masters degree in library & information science, or other academic subject

Salary & Benefits

Monthly: $3,850 - $5,725

Annual: $46,200 - $68,700
