SUMMARY:  Working closely with the Director and other Associate Directors, this is highly responsible professional administrative library work, which involves supervision of Public Services.  Performs related and other work as required.

 

REQUIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

·         Attainment of B.A. or B.S. from an accredited university/college;

·         Attainment of graduate degree in Library and/or Information Science from an ALA-accredited university;

·         At least five years of increasingly responsible full-time professional (position requiring MLS) experience including at least three years in administrative capacity. 

If assigned a library vehicle to drive on a regular basis, must have good driving record with no DWI violations within the past five years and no other moving violations within past year.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

·         Comprehensive knowledge of professional library principles and practices;

·         Comprehensive knowledge of public library functions, facilities, and operations;

·         Comprehensive knowledge of patron needs and library services to meet those needs;

·         Comprehensive knowledge of standard library automated system modules.

·         Demonstrated ability to administer complex operations and long-range projects;

·         Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, department heads, trustees, employees, organizations, city/parish departments, and the public;

·         Demonstrated ability to supervise, train, and evaluate staff;

·         Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, to groups and individuals;

·         Demonstrated ability to be proficient on computer with various software.

Highly desirable:  Demonstrated ability to establish positive working relationships with staff.

           

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1.    Associate Director:  Works closely with the Director and other Associate Directors in the running of the library; helps develop policies and procedures; may function as Acting Director in the absence of the Director; attends Library Board meetings and Library Board committee meetings.

2.    Management:  Coordinates, directs and supervises the three Regional Branch Managers, the Adult Education Coordinator, the E-Branch Manager, the Teen Services Coordinator, the Children’s Services Coordinator and the part-time CPE rotating collection manager; aids these employees in achieving their goals; evaluates workflow and productivity; provides opportunities for continuing education in their area of expertise; creates an environment conducive to communication and cooperation.

3.    Public Services:  Receives compliments and complaints and tailors public services responses to their needs; investigates and resolves complaints; works to instill an attitude of approachability and helpfulness in library staff; speaks to groups about library services; may coordinate programs for adults, teens and children in the absence of the coordinators of these areas.

4.    Personnel:  Hires, trains, supervises and evaluates 7 (seven) full-time employees and 1 (one) part-time employee; ultimate responsibility for all public services comprised of 12 (twelve) full-time and 9 (nine) part-time branches and a bookmobile; fully participates in the hiring process; reviews work plans on a regular basis; maintains effective working relationships with all staff and is available for the staff to discuss all issues as needed; completes payroll; processes and reconciles all leave requests; recommends staffing needs and changes; conducts investigations and resolves employee inquiries and/or complaints; participates in corrective action meetings; makes informed decisions based on policies listed in the Employee Handbook; keeps staff and supervisors informed on new policies and procedures.

5.    Finances:  May be responsible for approving invoices, petty cash expenditures, travel requests, equipment and furniture purchases, and payroll.

6.    Reports:  Collects data and produces reports as needed.

7.    Professional Development:  attends monthly management meetings; meetings of appointed committees and workshops and conferences

8.    Other duties as needed.

 

PRESENT SCHEDULE [subject to change without notice]

This is an exempt position with a basic schedule of Monday – Friday during regular business hours.   Schedule may fluctuate due to training needs of staff and may include evening and weekend work on occasion. 

 

BENEFITS

12 days of vacation/year (with increases every other year up to 22 days), 11 paid holidays/year + 1 personal day, 15 days sick leave/year.  Medical, dental and life insurance; library pays 70% of employee’s and dependents’ insurance premiums.  Excellent retirement system with the City of Shreveport.  Tuition reimbursement available after one year of employment.  Good library support for continuing education and attendance at conferences.
