The Qatar Foundation is establishing a state-of-the-art Central Library to serve the diverse information needs of the residents of the State of Qatar. The Central Library, to be located in Education City, will take a leadership role in meeting Qatar Foundation’s goals to become Qatar's premier information resource for the academic, research and public community. It will serve the general public, universities, schools, research institutes and Education City partners. The Central Library will offer a suite of services and programs to support education and research through comprehensive print and digital collections.

The Central Library seeks dynamic, innovative, service-oriented and culturally sensitive applicants for the position of: Head, Cataloging.

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Head, Cataloging is responsible for formulating and implementing policies, procedures and projects relating to cataloging and production of metadata for materials in all formats for the Central Library. The position provides leadership and guidance regarding metadata, intellectual and physical access to collections, and participates in the development of discovery tools.  The position will supervise and coordinate the work of the cataloging team.  The incumbent will assist the Associate Director for Technical Services with departmental and library-wide strategic planning.  The position may act in the absence of the Associate Director for Technical Services.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

·         Provide leadership in the Central Library in the formulation of policies, practices and projects relating to cataloging, metadata, intellectual and physical access to print and digital resources

·         Participate in departmental and library-wide strategic planning

·         Develop and manage bibliographic, metadata, subject analysis and classification standards and controls

·         Ensure original and copy cataloging, authority files and metadata creation for all library resources, both in English and Arabic

·         Lead, supervise, evaluate and train the team consisting of professional and support staff

 

REQUIREMENTS & PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

·         Masters degree in Library or Information Science accredited by the American Library Association or foreign equivalent.

·         7 or more years supervisory experience in a technical services cataloguing environment

·         Knowledge of international cataloguing standards such as Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2R) and RDA, Dewey Classification, Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), MARC 2

·         Demonstrated experience in the cataloguing of print and digital resources

·         Knowledge of copyright and licensing issues affecting digital resources

·         Ability to plan and manage multiple projects and assignments concurrently and effectively

·         Knowledge of Arabic an asset but is not required
