Research Librarian for Student Success and Instruction

Scope of the position
The UCI Libraries motivates students to become lifelong and self-sufficient learners in an information-laden society. Based in the Department of Education and Outreach, the Research Librarian for Student Success and Instruction will work closely with library colleagues, relevant academic departments, student support units, and campus partners to define, envision, and create a vibrant community of scholastic inquiry that supports undergraduate education and retention. To facilitate this process, the Research Librarian will contribute to the UCI Libraries’ ongoing information literacy instruction services and expand outreach efforts to UCI’s growing student population, particularly first-generation students, traditionally underrepresented students, and international students. The incumbent will take a leadership role in the Libraries’ nascent data information literacy efforts, contribute to the UCI Libraries’ in-person and online reference services, and assist students, faculty, and staff with issues related to emerging pedagogical technologies. Finally, the successful candidate will act as the UCI Libraries’ liaison to the School of Education. In this role, the Research Librarian will develop collections and promote library resources and services that serve the School of Education and its mission to promote educational success and achievement of diverse learners of all ages through research, teaching, and service activities.
Key responsibilities include:
· Contribute to the Libraries’ information literacy instruction programs for students enrolled in lower-division writing courses and other information literacy initiatives.
· Partner with appropriate individuals and groups across campus to develop, implement, and assess outreach initiatives that support undergraduate and graduate student success.
· Contribute to the UCI Libraries’ existing outreach initiatives to new students, first-generation students, traditionally underrepresented students, international students, and transfer students.
· Provide leadership in the Libraries’ data literacy programming for undergraduates.
· Serve as the UCI Libraries’ liaison to the School of Education, developing and managing appropriate collections and providing specialized reference and instructional support.
· Monitor current developments in the field of Education in order to develop and implement assessable and pedagogical approaches to information literacy or other library-related instruction.
· Participate in the provision of general reference services and provide reference assistance related to emerging library services (data, scholarly communication, digital scholarship, and/or digital pedagogy).
Qualifications
Required:
• Graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution, or equivalent combination of relevant advanced degree and library experience.
• Ability to teach information literacy.
• Familiarity with the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education.
• Strong interest in planning, implementing, and assessing user-centered services and/or initiatives in an academic library or comparable academic environment.
• Commitment to designing and implementing library outreach initiatives to students traditionally underrepresented in higher education.
• Enthusiasm for, and knowledge of, pedagogies that encourage critical questioning and metacognitive thinking.
• Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively and to promote teamwork, diversity, equality, and inclusiveness within UCI Libraries and the campus.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written).
• Capacity to analyze, learn, and implement emerging and evolving technologies into library services and instruction.
• Ability to meet the University of California criteria for advancement and promotion.
Preferred:
• Two years recent academic library experience, preferably in public services.
• Two years recent experience planning, implementing, and assessing user-centered services and/or initiatives in an academic library or comparable professional environment.
• Formal coursework, training, and/or professional experience in the field(s) of education, rhetoric and composition, information literacy, and/or data literacy.
The Department of Education and Outreach
The Education and Outreach Department leads the UCI Libraries’ outreach and instruction activities and programs, which emphasize information literacy, research skills, scholarly communication, and critical thinking. The Department coordinates, integrates, and assesses library instruction and outreach activities, including subject-based, graduate, and professional school instruction. The Department operates in a collaborative, team-based environment and works closely with members of the Libraries’ Reference and Collection Development Departments in order to fulfill its mission. The Department consists of 5 librarians (including the Department Head) and 1 library assistant.

Salary & Benefits: Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience based on the University of California pay scales. Appointment is anticipated to be at the Assistant Librarian or Associate Librarian rank with a salary of $48,438 - $74,337.
Librarians are entitled to two days per month of annual leave, thirteen paid holidays, and one day per month sick leave. The University has an excellent retirement system and offers a variety of group health, life, and disability insurance plans. Benefits are equal to approximately 40% of salary.
