The NCSU Libraries is seeking applications for the Library Associate position in the Special Collections Research Center for placement in Fall 2015. This position is a twelve-month, part-time position that offers graduate students the opportunity to join an innovative and growing special collections program. The positions are primarily assigned to arrange and describe collections.  The Library Associate will examine patterns of documentation and, following archival principles, develop and implement arrangement schemes, write clear and accurate descriptions of collections, and produce finding aids using Encoded Archival Description (EAD). He or she will also perform basic preservation tasks and be introduced to issues relating to digital collections. Library Associates will rotate in staffing the Special Collections Public Services Desk on Saturday and other times if required. He or she will interact with patrons, monitor usage of archival materials, and provide reference assistance. The Library Associate may also support instruction efforts and may supervise undergraduate student assistants on various projects. He or she may assist in the preparation of public exhibitions or participate in digitization initiatives.

The Library Associates program provides valuable experience in a leading research library while allowing participants to work closely with librarians and information technology professionals on important special collections projects. Associates gain experience working in teams, exposure to relevant professional issues, and mentoring from experienced professionals. The Special Collections Research Center houses the University Archives and the manuscript and rare book collections.
