Employer Description

 

The American Swedish Institute, founded in 1929 in Minneapolis, MN, serves as a gathering place for people to share stories and experiences around universal themes of tradition, migration, craft and the arts, all informed by enduring ties to Sweden. The Library/Archives holds approximately 17,500 published materials, approximately 150 special collections including manuscripts, personal papers, journals, and correspondence, plus various collections of photographic, audiovisual, and three dimensional artifacts, which document Swedish arts & culture, Swedish-American lifestyle, and the Nordic immigrant experience in the Upper Midwest.

 

Duties/Responsibilities

 

The American Swedish Institute invites applications for part time catalogers to perform original and copy cataloging of holdings into the Library’s PastPerfect database. Entries into the database will follow MARC record cataloging. The position is a grant-funded project through June 30, 2011. Responsibilities include:  retrieving materials from the storage area in the building; inventorying; analyzing content of Swedish and English published books and periodicals from as early as the 16th century; inputting information into the PastPerfect database following Library standards; and other duties as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications

 

  • Database skills required.
  • Must be able to lift 40-pound boxes on a regular basis.
  • Must be able to bend and reach while on ladder.
  • Swedish language fluency/facility required.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Cataloging experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Graduate degree in Library and Information Science strongly preferred.
  • Experience with PastPerfect database software strongly preferred.

 

Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated experience being organized, meticulous, and responsible; who can undertake detailed projects; and who would enjoy working with Swedish language materials in a friendly atmosphere.
