SENIOR ASSOCIATE DEAN OF LIBRARIES

The Vanderbilt University Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position of Senior Associate Dean of Libraries. Working closely with and reporting to the Dean of Libraries, the Senior Associate Dean of Libraries will play a key role in realizing the strategic vision for the Vanderbilt University Libraries, already one of the nation’s top research libraries. As the Dean of Libraries is progressively engaged in university level activities, this position is responsible for assisting in the identification and development of strategic opportunities and directions. Six divisional libraries, along with various other units and several system-wide coordinators, with a combined budget of $12 million, report to the Senior Associate Dean. This position also coordinates and works with all the libraries to plan and manage the Vanderbilt University Library’s information and services to the University and larger community. He/She will serve a broader role by acting for the Dean of Libraries in her absence. Leadership emphasis will be placed on guiding operational and strategic projects as well as enriching internal and external partnerships and collaboration.
The successful candidate will be an experienced, creative and effective leader, dedicated to serving the needs and interests of the campus community. In addition, the candidate will:
· have extensive knowledge and understanding of research libraries, their roles in higher education, and the ways the roles of traditional research collections and services are changing
· possess excellent managerial, interpersonal, communication, organizational, outreach, budgetary and planning skills
· have demonstrated ability to help the library navigate the changes in tasks, services, and staffing that will be required over the coming years
· have expertise in strategic planning, project management, cross-organizational collaboration, and creative approaches to problem solving
· have a record which demonstrates user-centered program development
· be committed to the recruitment, development and retention of a highly talented and diverse workforce
· hold an advanced degree in a relevant discipline and a distinguished record of contribution to the profession and higher education.
The Jean and Alexander Heard Library at Vanderbilt University has a staff of over 200, an annual budget exceeding $24 million, over 3.4 million volumes, 3 million microforms, and 55,000 serials, of which some 47,000 are available electronically. The Heard Library includes the campus learning management system and Vanderbilt Television News Archives along with the Central Library, Divinity Library, Alyne Massey Queener Law Library, Walker Management Library, Anne Potter Wilson Music Library, Peabody Library, Sara Shannon Stevenson Science & Engineering Library, Special Collections and University Archives and the Eskind Biomedical Library. A major renovation of the General Library Building, housing the largest library on campus, is being planned. To include a gallery, digital and museum exhibit space, and public gathering space, it will become one of the primary entrances to campus.
The Library is a member of the Association of Research Libraries, the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries, and other organizations, as well. Vanderbilt University is ranked as one of the nation’s top 20 universities by U.S. News, with several programs and disciplines ranking in the top 10. Vanderbilt enrolls more than 12,000 students, of which 6,637 are undergraduates and 5,456 graduate and professional students.
