The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is the largest government-funded tertiary institution in Hong Kong in terms of student number. It offers programmes at Doctorate, Master's, Bachelor's degrees and Higher Diploma levels. It has a full-time academic staff strength of around 1,200. The total consolidated expenditure budget of the University is in excess of HK$4 billion per year.

The Pao Yue-kong Library actively enhances learning and research by providing a flexible and stimulating study environment, seamless and timely access to high quality information resources and efficient and innovative services, contributing to intellectual inquiry and knowledge creation in the University. This Library Hub comprises one of the largest collections of scientific, engineering and business materials in East Asia. The present holdings exceed 2.2 million, to which more than 40,000 volumes are added annually. Over 4,100 active print serial titles are held in the Library. The Library also provides internet access to over 32,610 unique full-text e-journal titles, almost 225,100 e-books, and a wide array of multi-media and e-learning programmes. The Library Building is a six-storey purpose-designed building with an area of 16,662 square metres, providing approximately 3,623 study places.
The University is now inviting applications or nominations for the post of University Librarian who will assume managerial responsibility over all functions relating the Library including the strategic development, management and operations of the University Library.
Reporting to the Vice President (Academic Development), the appointee will be required to (a) provide strategic leadership in setting the direction for the development of the Library, prepare staffing and budgeting plans, implement the approved plans, and advise on the information services to be provided to the University community; (b) lead a team of professional and support staff for the effective and efficient operations of the University Library; (c) represent the Library to University units, advocate for the Library within the University administrative governance structures, enhance the role that the Library plays within the University and worldwide, and represent the Library to local, regional and international library collaboration affairs; and (d) chair a number of Library Committees and sit on various University Committees.
Applicants should have (a) vision to enhance the role the Library plays within the University and worldwide; (b) publications demonstrating successful leadership experience or research in library science; (c) a proven track record of leadership role in a university library; (d) an in depth knowledge of information technology; and (e) excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Remuneration and Conditions of Service
Salary offered will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Initial appointment will be made on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract. Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement. Remuneration package will be highly competitive. Applicants should state their current and expected salary in the application.
