THE ROBERT B. HAAS FAMILY ARTS LIBRARY
The Haas Family Arts Library at Yale consists of collections from three (FOUR) formerly-separate operating units: Art and Architecture, Arts of the Book, Drama and (ADD) the Visual Resources Collection. Now located under one roof, these libraries support arts-area programming at Yale, including the Schools of Architecture, Art, and Drama, and the department of the History of Art, as well as the teaching and research needs of the Yale community beyond the visual arts. In addition, the Arts Library houses several prominent archival and special collections in Art and Architecture, Arts of the Book, and Drama, ranging from type specimens and woodblocks to theatrical archives to one of the world's foremost collection of books on color.

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Yale University Library welcomes applications and nominations for the 2012/13 Kress Fellowship in Art Librarianship. The Kress Fellowship is intended for a recent graduate from library school who wishes to pursue a career in art librarianship. This fellowship is made possible through the generosity of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation.   Through this fellowship, the Kress Foundation seeks to achieve in the field of art librarianship what it has accomplished for art history and art conservation:  ensuring the growth of the discipline by promoting the advancement of new professionals.

 

The Haas Family Arts Library at Yale serves a distinguished array of academic and museum programs, architects, artists and scholars. Kress Fellows have the opportunity to interact routinely with faculty, staff and students in distinguished Schools of Architecture, Art, and Drama; a nationally ranked department of the History of Art; and two outstanding university art museums, the Yale Center for British Art and the Yale University Art Gallery. They also have occasion to collaborate with colleagues from throughout the Yale University Library, including the Sterling Memorial Library, the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, and the library and rare books department of the Yale Center for British Art. The rich professional and scholarly resources of New York City and Boston's art libraries and museums are within two hours travel, providing still further opportunities for professional growth and professional contact with colleagues.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

This year the focus of the Kress Fellowship will be on public services librarianship, specializing in architecture and design, which will include experience in reference services and library research education. During their tenure at Yale, Kress Fellows are expected to pursue a mutually agreed-upon project resulting in a publishable paper or a new library service (such as a webpage or research guide). Kress Fellows are also introduced to a broad spectrum of professional activities and may have the opportunity to perform collection development activities or assist with library-based exhibitions.   Kress Fellows also participate in library planning committees and task forces and engage in campus, regional, and national professional organizations and other collaborative activities. Expected to be professionally active and represent the Library and the University in the academic, scholarly, and professional community.  May be required to participate with disaster recovery efforts.  May be assigned to work at West Campus location in West Haven, CT.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program for library and information science.  Excellent analytical, organizational, management, customer service, and interpersonal skills.  Ability to effectively build partnerships and promote the benefits of change in an academic culture that often values ambiguity, diversity of opinion, and historic precedent.  Ability to communicate effectively through both oral and written expression.  Ability to work both independently and collegially in a demanding and rapidly changing environment.

 

Preferred:  Advanced degree and/or relevant experience in history of art, architecture or related arts disciplines.  Experience with web design and development and electronic information resources.  Experience with HTML and XML.  Reading knowledge of two or more Western European languages.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Head, Library Web Services provides leadership with respect to library web services, including strategic planning, management and development of web-based services and applications.
The position leads the collaborative design and overall development of web-based services across the library.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

-          Develop strategies and operational objectives of the library web services unit in conjunction with the Associate Director for Library Information Technology

-          Lead, manage and supervise the staff of Library Web Services unit

-          Develop a framework for integrated web services for all Central Library  interfaces and web-based applications

-          Proven record of team leadership with strong supervisory skills

An exceptional international opportunity awaits an innovative forward-thinking librarian at the American University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (near Dubai). As part of the Public Services Department, the successful candidate will be responsible for providing collection development for Arabic language materials and in the area of Middle Eastern Studies, liaising with the Arabic and Translation Studies program and other programs as required, as well as for providing instruction and reference.  In collaboration with librarians in the Technology and Technical Services Department, the position also catalogs and acquires Arabic language material.

 

Areas of responsibility include: serve as liaison to the Arabic and Translation Studies faculty and other programs as required; select, acquire and catalog Arabic language materials; select materials related to Middle Eastern Studies; provide reference and instruction services.

 

Required Qualifications

Master's degree in library science from an ALA-accredited school with a minimum of two years of recent experience in an academic library; fluency in Arabic language (reading, writing, speaking); excellent oral and written English language skills; strong public service orientation; commitment to working in a culturally diverse learning environment; flexibility; and excellent interpersonal and organizational skills. 

 

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to work collegially and effectively with others, solve problems, meet deadlines, and thrive in an environment of constant change; excellent communication and presentation skills are also essential.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Degree in an area related to Middle Eastern Studies; familiarity with Arabic cataloging issues (name and subject authorities, transliteration, etc.).

 

Salary and Benefits

The salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience; includes a 10% of base salary payment in lieu of retirement benefits.  Free furnished accommodation and utilities are provided along with nine weeks’ annual vacation. A self-directed benefit plan provides a variety of choices including annual air tickets to place of origin for self and family, healthcare and dependent educational allowance.  The UAE levies no income tax, however, some U.S. Federal taxes may apply to U.S. citizens and resident aliens.

The American University of Sharjah is located in the United Arab Emirates and is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Working in a team environment, the incumbent will be responsible for leading library-wide efforts to optimize technologies designed to help publicize the libraries’ collections, and for providing user-centric services for information access and discovery.

Cataloging and Collection Content Organization Librarian

Position Summary:  Position Summary:  The George Washington University seeks an innovative individual to join the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library to manage all cataloging and organization of the current content of the library, including all types and formats of materials.  This position manages the Cataloging and Reserves unit and the health science-specific areas of the University-wide Institutional Repository effort.  It also supervises production of the faculty publications database and interlibrary loan activities.  The position also participates in the Library's instructional program as an Informatics Tutor.  The Cataloging and Content Organization Librarian reports to the Associate Director, Library Operations and is a member of the library operations management team.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

The unit encompasses all cataloging, reserves and institutional repository activities.  Responsibilities include:

1.      Plans and directs the work of staff responsible for the cataloging, classification and organization of library materials in all formats (including monographs, serials, analytics, electronic resources, audiovisuals, and software).

2.      Oversees the creation and management of bibliographic and authority files and item records, including those for reserves.

3.      Performs original and copy cataloging using OCLC, AACR2r, MeSH, and LC classification.  Authority records/files include MeSH, LC Name, and Series.

4.      Maintains current knowledge of the development of national and international cataloging standards, advances in technology, and trends in librarianship.  Provides leadership within the library on the organization of information.

5.      Coordinates the processing of reserve materials by Cataloging and Reserves Specialist, including electronic reserves.

6.      Develops and manages Himmelfarb Library's input to the University's Institutional Repository

7.      Participates in the Library's instructional program as an Informatics Tutor.

8.      Participates in the Library's Liaison Program, working with one or more departments as assigned within the guidelines and expectations of the program.

9.      Collaborates with the Library Director regarding specific copyright issues specifically associated with Reserves.

10.  Oversees compilation of cataloging and reserves statistics from the integrated library system.

11.  Coordinates with the Electronic Resources & Instructional, Systems and Serials Librarians to ensure that the catalog and electronic resources database are synchronized.

12.  Collaborates with the Print Collections Librarian on projects related to collection maintenance.

13.  Manages contracts, such as with OCLC Eastern or other similar situations specific to the cataloging function.  Maintains or coordinates current monographic holdings in bibliographic utilities like OCLC and SERHOLD and ALADIN.

14.  Writes, revises, and implements procedures.

15.  Initiates and assists with projects in technical services and systems and maintains up-to-date job manual available to staff. 

16.  Maintains knowledge of current trends in librarianship and their implementation in the area.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Basic:

1.      Masters in Library or Information Science (MLS) from an ALA-accredited school

2.      3-4 years experience cataloging in all formats using an integrated library system and OCLC. 

3.      Demonstrated working knowledge of MARC21 bibliographic, authority, and holding formats; AACR2r and LC Rule Interpretations (LCRIs); LC classification schedules; use, interpretation, and application of LC subject headings (LCSH) and/or NLM subject headings (MeSH). 

4.      Demonstrated knowledge of current trends in libraries, especially the digital environment and effects of digitization within technical services and the library as a whole. 

5.      Demonstrated working experience with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel. 

6.      Supervisory experience.

 

Preferred:

1.      Demonstrated oral and written communication skills. 

2.      Ability to solve problems and to work collaboratively.

3.      Experience with Sirsi-Dynix Symphony integrated library system.

4.      Experience with cataloging of medical and health sciences materials

5.      Working knowledge of or experience with Dspace and institutional repositories.

6.      Working knowledge of interlibrary loan.

7.      Working knowledge of FRBR and RDA
