Assistant Professor - First-Year Success Librarian


Murphy Library at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse is seeking a dynamic, student-centered librarian to engage UWL first-year students in effective and innovative library instruction and programming activities. Responsibilities include delivering a substantial number of information literacy instruction sessions to undergraduates in a variety of disciplines, participating in assessment of first-year library instruction to ensure that it cultivates students' critical thinking and information literacy skills, serving as an instructional liaison to one or more UWL academic departments, managing the library’s presence at new student orientation and other first-year student events, developing relationships and collaborating with campus first-year stakeholders, and collaborating with the head of instruction, outreach, and engagement librarians on activities pertaining to first-year student success. This position will participate in collegial governance, and campus and professional activities.


Salary and Rank: Competitive salary for 9-month tenure track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor. Partial summer contracts may also be available.


Anticipated Starting Date: August 28, 2017.

The Indiana University Libraries seek a collaborative and service-minded individual to work alongside librarians, faculty, and university partners to initiate, sustain, and assess the libraries’ support of student learning in undergraduate courses, with a focus on learning in the first year. The Undergraduate Education Librarian will investigate and capitalize upon the intersection of information literacy, learning, and orientation for undergraduate students, with an emphasis on creating effective and sustainable connections between the libraries and targeted undergraduate learning environments and learning communities. Candidates with knowledge of student engagement, pedagogical practices, instructional design, and assessment of student learning outcomes in general education and discipline-specific contexts will be given the highest consideration. This is a tenure-track position reporting to the Head of Teaching & Learning.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

·         Engage in outreach and development of partnerships to identify and support student learning within general education courses and to establish positive connections between the libraries and undergraduate students

·         Partner with subject librarians and teaching faculty to integrate information literacy into first-year experience opportunities, general education curriculum, and campus-wide initiatives

·         Develop, adapt, and assess instructional materials for use in small group, large class, and online environments

·         Help coordinate the participation of libraries in first year experience programming campus-wide, including orientation activities and welcome events for new and transfer students

·         Develop partnerships with IUB initiatives and departments such as Mosaic, eLearning Design & Services, and the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning to integrate information literacy more holistically into online environments and learning management systems

·         Promote the Libraries' culture of diversity and inclusion, and support the values outlined in Indiana University Bloomington’s Campus Strategic Plan (https://provost.indiana.edu/strategic-plan/index.html) and the Libraries' Diversity Strategic Plan (forthcoming)

 

QUALIFICATIONS

·         ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library Science (MLS).

·         Knowledge of instructional design, pedagogy, and assessment principles for effective information literacy instruction across multiple platforms (e.g., face-to-face, online).

·         Experience with library instruction or other teaching experience.  Enthusiasm for working with undergraduate students and faculty, with a demonstrated commitment to meeting their information and research needs.

·         Working knowledge of current and emerging technologies and their instructional applications.  High degree of comfort in learning new software for instructional purposes.

·         Ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse populations and a commitment to incorporating the differences, complexities and opportunities that diversity brings to an organization.

·         Working knowledge of or familiarity with the principles of universal design for learning.

·         Ability to work in a team environment and build working relationships with campus colleagues.

·         Ability to meet standards for achieving tenure and promotion.

The Indiana University Libraries seek a knowledgeable, innovative, dynamic, and service oriented individual to serve as International Studies Librarian.  Reporting to the Head of Area Studies, the International Studies Librarian will be responsible for collection development, reference and research consultations, and instruction for a diverse community of students and faculty engaged in interdisciplinary areas of research and teaching spanning a wide range of topics and themes related to international studies.   The International Studies Librarian is responsible for two acquisitions funds: International Studies (which includes international documents, government documents, as well as the publications of non-governmental organizations), and the global studies fund (focusing on transnational resources). 

 

Established in 2012, Indiana University’s School of Global and International Studies (SGIS) opened its new state-of-the-art building in 2015.  The new building brings departments, area and language studies programs, and research centers related to area and international studies together and combines IU’s world-renowned area studies programs with newly established and developing programs in the areas of International and Global Studies. With responsibilities related to all international studies activities on the IU campus, the International Studies Librarian will serve as the primary liaison to the Department of International Studies and the Center for the Study of Global Change within SGIS.

RESPONSIBILITIES

·         Develop and manage the library’s interdisciplinary collections in the areas of International and Global Studies. Responsibilities include managing two acquisitions funds to select materials in all formats, work with vendors, conduct ongoing collection assessment and analysis, select items for the Auxiliary Library Facility (ALF), as well as other collections-related activities.

·         Serve as the liaison to the International Studies Department and the Center for the Study of Global Change

·         Support research and scholarly communication in the above subject areas through outreach to faculty and students.

·         Provide reference and instructional support related to International and Global Studies for students and faculty across the campus. 

·         Work with instructors and faculty in the School of Global and International Studies to develop active and collaborative approaches to teaching

·         Actively collaborate with other library departments, such as Social Sciences, and Teaching & Learning, to teach and provide services.

·         Serve as an active member of the Libraries’ Area Studies Department.

·         Contribute to developments in the field of area studies librarianship through active professional engagement and research, presenting and publishing in appropriate venues.

·         Develop regional, national, and international partnerships and collaborations

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

·         ALA-accredited Master of Library Science (MLS). Candidates with advanced degree(s) in relevant subject areas and appropriate experience in an academic setting will also be considered

·         A strong academic background in International Studies or a related subject, such as Political Science.

·         Demonstrated understanding of major trends in research and scholarly publishing related to International Studies.

·         Ability to deliver in-person and online reference services, which includes knowledge of reference tools and strategies used in academic libraries, the ability to synthesize and relay information, and the ability to instruct patrons on research techniques.

·         Some teaching experience.

·         Understanding of the complexities required to navigate interdisciplinary. collections, and of international and government documents.

·         Excellent communication skills in English.

·         Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work well with diverse populations of faculty, students, and academic colleagues.

  • Ability to develop partnerships and collaborate creatively and effectively with others, both across library departments and beyond the library.

·         Ability to meet the requirements of a tenure-track librarian position.

The St. Louis Mercantile Library at the University of Missouri-St. Louis is currently seeking an energetic library professional for the position of Special Collections Librarian and Curator of the Herman T. Pott National Waterways Library, the preeminent river history collection in the United States.  The Mercantile Library, now in its 170th year, holds historic archival, rare book and manuscript collections in the areas of Missouri history, westward expansion, American business history, and exemplary transportation holdings in river and rail history as well as a growing collection of Missouri and Midwestern art. This position reports to the Executive Director of the St. Louis Mercantile Library.

Librarian  I / II commensurate with qualifications and experience

Primary responsibilities of this position are coordinating processing, digitization and ongoing maintenance of Mercantile archival and manuscript special collections; coordinating collection development and acquisition of waterways materials in all formats; facilitating scholarly access to and ensuring long-term preservation of the special collections; providing in-depth research assistance for both in-person and distance researchers; assisting in developing and implementing Library policies; participating in maintaining and improving donor relations; participating in Mercantile and Pott Waterways special events and programs which include evenings and weekends.  Specific responsibilities include:

1.                  Develops and implements an integrated and coordinated approach for accessioning and processing new acquisitions and backlog holdings; supervising, prioritizing, and participating in archival assessments; accessioning, arrangement and description of archival materials.

2.                  Supervises the preparation of online and printed finding aids, catalogs, or other resources to provide access to the collections in accordance with the standards and best practices of the profession.

3.                  Collaborates with colleagues to enhance discovery of Library holdings through online access and digitization projects; participates in setting digitization priorities; oversees handling of special collections materials while being digitized.

4.                  Participates in developing and implementing metadata standards for digitized and born-digital special collections materials in consultation with other librarians.

5.                  Participates in providing special collections reference service and staffing Rare Book Reading Room.

6.                  Coordinates the work of staff assistants, volunteers, and interns pertaining to assigned collections.

7.                  Participates in events, exhibitions, instruction and outreach, donor relations, and collection development for the Mercantile Library and the Pott Waterways Library.

Requirements:

ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library Information Science.

Minimum one year of experience in a special collections library or archival repository, preferably in a university environment with large archival and special collections holdings.

A history of archival processing projects and collection management projects, both physical and digital.

Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office and Adobe Suite software.

Knowledge of preservation and metadata standards for media and electronic records.

Familiarity with the use of digital asset management systems and metadata for creating finding aids and providing access to digitized materials.

Excellent written and oral communication skills including exceptional public speaking skills.

The ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced and diverse environment.

Ability to safely move carts and book/flatbed trucks loaded up to 50 pounds; lift and bend with boxes or volumes weighing up to 40 pounds; carry large/awkward map carriers; climb and reach on step stools and rolling ladders; handle dollies and book/flatbed trucks.

Preferred:

Second subject advanced degree in relevant field.

Experience with Archivists’ Toolkit, ArchivesSpace, Archon, or similar software.

Familiarity with the descriptive standards for archival and manuscript materials such as DACS or EAD.

Experience in digital collections processing, data migration, and/or digital curation, and with XML editing tools.

Knowledge of or familiarity with other relevant industry standards, such as DCRM, AACR2, RDA, MARC, DublinCore, AMREMM, EAC, MODS, METS, LCNAF, and LCSH.

Demonstrated ability to coordinate, schedule, and handle heavy and complex workloads.

Desirable knowledge includes the practice of archival research and thorough knowledge of rare books, photographs, fine prints and other artwork.

Knowledge of intellectual property rights and issues related to born digital content and digitized special collections.

A good knowledge of American history, preferably including river and /or transportation history.

Reading knowledge of at least one foreign language.

A record of engagement with the archives and/or library professions.

A record of professional presentation, publication, and/or participation in relevant organizations such as SAA or RBMS.

LAC Group UK is seeking a French Language Expert - Researcher into Legislative Terminology for a temporary position with one of our international clients.   The client company maintains current and accurate information about laws and regulations that contain information requirements for businesses in the financial services sector.

The person being sought can be resident anywhere in the world and will work remotely, from home.  The day-to-day management of all assignments will be the responsibility of the Head of Research at the client company, who is resident in the UK.  The position is hourly paid and it is estimated that, initially, approx. 225 hours of work will be required. Essential Skills

The most attractive candidates will have an ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent at the time of hire and experience working in an academic library.  Demonstrated engagement in information literacy instruction with a focus on student learning; knowledge of current trends and best practices in information literacy instruction and assessment; experience with library research tools relevant to the sciences; related reference and research consultation experience; understanding of collection development including financial responsibility in an academic library; and knowledge of the scholarly communications process (publishing, copyright, repositories) will also be essential.  Demonstrated enthusiasm for creative and engaging outreach; strong interpersonal, communications, and organizational skills; and the ability to work collaboratively with faculty, students, technology professionals, and library colleagues are also necessary.  A degree or track record of scholarship in the physical sciences; at least one year of teaching using instructional design, lesson planning and assessment; and one year of collection development in an academic library would be desirable.

The St. Louis Mercantile Library at the University of Missouri-St. Louis is currently seeking an energetic library professional for the position of Special Collections Librarian and Curator of the Herman T. Pott National Waterways Library, the preeminent river history collection in the United States.  The Mercantile Library, now in its 170th year, holds historic archival, rare book and manuscript collections in the areas of Missouri history, westward expansion, American business history, and exemplary transportation holdings in river and rail history as well as a growing collection of Missouri and Midwestern art. This position reports to the Executive Director of the St. Louis Mercantile Library.

Librarian  I / II commensurate with qualifications and experience

Primary responsibilities of this position are coordinating processing, digitization and ongoing maintenance of Mercantile archival and manuscript special collections; coordinating collection development and acquisition of waterways materials in all formats; facilitating scholarly access to and ensuring long-term preservation of the special collections; providing in-depth research assistance for both in-person and distance researchers; assisting in developing and implementing Library policies; participating in maintaining and improving donor relations; participating in Mercantile and Pott Waterways special events and programs which include evenings and weekends.  Specific responsibilities include:

1.                  Develops and implements an integrated and coordinated approach for accessioning and processing new acquisitions and backlog holdings; supervising, prioritizing, and participating in archival assessments; accessioning, arrangement and description of archival materials.

2.                  Supervises the preparation of online and printed finding aids, catalogs, or other resources to provide access to the collections in accordance with the standards and best practices of the profession.

3.                  Collaborates with colleagues to enhance discovery of Library holdings through online access and digitization projects; participates in setting digitization priorities; oversees handling of special collections materials while being digitized.

4.                  Participates in developing and implementing metadata standards for digitized and born-digital special collections materials in consultation with other librarians.

5.                  Participates in providing special collections reference service and staffing Rare Book Reading Room.

6.                  Coordinates the work of staff assistants, volunteers, and interns pertaining to assigned collections.

7.                  Participates in events, exhibitions, instruction and outreach, donor relations, and collection development for the Mercantile Library and the Pott Waterways Library.

Requirements:

ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library Information Science.

Minimum one year of experience in a special collections library or archival repository, preferably in a university environment with large archival and special collections holdings.

A history of archival processing projects and collection management projects, both physical and digital.

Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office and Adobe Suite software.

Knowledge of preservation and metadata standards for media and electronic records.

Familiarity with the use of digital asset management systems and metadata for creating finding aids and providing access to digitized materials.

Excellent written and oral communication skills including exceptional public speaking skills.

The ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced and diverse environment.

Ability to safely move carts and book/flatbed trucks loaded up to 50 pounds; lift and bend with boxes or volumes weighing up to 40 pounds; carry large/awkward map carriers; climb and reach on step stools and rolling ladders; handle dollies and book/flatbed trucks.

Preferred:

Second subject advanced degree in relevant field.

Experience with Archivists’ Toolkit, ArchivesSpace, Archon, or similar software.

Familiarity with the descriptive standards for archival and manuscript materials such as DACS or EAD.

Experience in digital collections processing, data migration, and/or digital curation, and with XML editing tools.

Knowledge of or familiarity with other relevant industry standards, such as DCRM, AACR2, RDA, MARC, DublinCore, AMREMM, EAC, MODS, METS, LCNAF, and LCSH.

Demonstrated ability to coordinate, schedule, and handle heavy and complex workloads.

Desirable knowledge includes the practice of archival research and thorough knowledge of rare books, photographs, fine prints and other artwork.

Knowledge of intellectual property rights and issues related to born digital content and digitized special collections.

A good knowledge of American history, preferably including river and /or transportation history.

Reading knowledge of at least one foreign language.

A record of engagement with the archives and/or library professions.

A record of professional presentation, publication, and/or participation in relevant organizations such as SAA or RBMS.

Rank and salary commensurate with experience. Base salary Librarian I: $47,476. Position has substantial benefits package including generous paid vacation and personal days, competitive medical/dental/vision insurance, and retirement plan.
