Publishing/Web Services Developer

The State University of New York (SUNY) at Geneseo, Milne Library, seeks a Publishing/Web Services Developer. This is full-time, 12-months position. 

Under the direction of the Head of the Information Technology Services Department, this individual is responsible for the coordination and development of new applications and web services, as well as maintenance of existing ones, in ASP.NET and other frameworks to support the work of Milne Library and the College. 

This position has a significant role in the planning and implementation of publishing, web services and digital projects initiatives that are transforming teaching, learning, research and scholarship. Some of these initiatives include the IDS Project (idsproject.org), Digital Thoreau (digitalthoreau.org) and a range of projects & services that utilize digital library systems and publishing platforms (including IR+, Omeka, Open Journal Systems, Open Conference Systems, Drupal, WordPress, CreateSpace and other commercial publishing services).

This individual will work collaboratively with others to plan, develop and implement systems that meet the requirements of the initiatives; and provide technical support to the IDS Project, Assessment Team and Web Team. Performs other duties as required.

The Publishing/Web Services Developer is a key position for the design and management of Library’s online environment and publishing services, a strategic area for growth and innovation for Milne Library.  This developer will provide programming expertise, some systems administration and support for a wide range of web and publishing systems.

Description of Responsibilities:

  1. Plan, develop, test, implement and document new web applications for library programs and initiatives
  2. Analyze, modify and maintain existing applications
  3. Install, configure and maintain software programs on networked servers
  4. Assist with managing IIS and windows servers
  5. Work collaboratively with others in and outside of the Library
  6. Provide technical support to Library teams

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS in Computer Science, Web Development, Information Architecture, or related field
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in web development/programming in ASP.NET (C# or VB.NET)
  • In-depth knowledge and experience of web programming, including demonstrated abilities with scripting and web programming utilizing:
    • HTML, XHTML and CSS

Reporting to the Dean of Libraries, this position provides strategic leadership for the Public Services departments and units including reference, access services, instruction, web services, interlibrary loan, and the Science Library. Additionally, the Assistant/Associate Dean provides administrative oversight of personnel, budgets, and activities; insures appropriate internal and external communication; and serves as the primary advocate to ensure that the Library gives excellent service as it responds to current and future needs of the user community. The Assistant/Associate Dean of Public Services will serve on key leadership teams in the library. This is a tenure track position with the expectation of ongoing achievement in librarianship, research, and service.

Incumbent's Responsibilities:
• Develop, motivate, and inspire a highly effective public services team
• Continue the library's commitment to innovative, user-centered services

Job Summary:

The Yellowhead Tribal College (YTC) Library is undertaking a grant-funded project to develop and implement an Integrated Information Literacy Program (IILP).

A critical component of this project will involve the hiring of a consulting librarian on contract from November 1, 2012 to October 31, 2013.

The Integrated Information Literacy Program will thoroughly integrate information literacy instruction into course delivery at YTC. The consultant hired will collaborate with the Dean of Programs, the Manager of Library Services and Operations, and YTC Faculty and Instructors to design and develop an information literacy program that will be integrated into all programs offered by the college. The ILLP will be tied to earning credit and/or fulfilling competency requirements, and will be embedded in a wide variety of learning environments and situations (in class, outside class and online).

The consulting librarian will assist to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Designing and developing an Integrated Information Literacy Program in line with ACRL Competency Standards
  2. Integrating program  into every YTC course and program
  3. Instructing YTC staff to facilitate delivery of this program
  4. Providing direct information literacy instruction to students
  5. Evaluating and assessing IILP program as implemented within contract year
  6. Recommend and establish policies and procedures for implementing IILP in future
  7. The creation of  new library guides and the revision of existing guides
  8. Assistance with the continued implementation of Course Director Learning Management System

 

Qualifications and Assets:

  • MLIS degree from an accredited institution
  • Interest in working at a First Nations College
  • Familiarity with ACRL  Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education is required; working knowledge is an asset
  • Familiarity with program assessment; working knowledge is an asset
  • Familiarity with Springshare LibGuide platform is an asset

Responsibilities:

 

·         Deliver excellent customer service and support to Innovative Interfaces’ global customer base by means of telephone, email and web.

·         Analyze, troubleshoot, resolve and document problems of all levels of complexity with the Innovative products on large scale user systems.

·         Address customer requests for status reports on open service tickets.

·         Triage, escalate and facilitate service issues requiring urgent attention.

·         Contribute to Innovative knowledge base and documentation.

·         Other duties as assigned.

 

Requirements

 

·         Written and verbal fluency in English. Additional languages (Spanish, French, Arabic, CJK languages) are highly desirable.

·         Minimum of one year experience delivering software support or help desk services.

·         Experience working in library operations (Opac, Circulations, Technical Services).

·         Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a positive and professional phone manner.

·         Detail-oriented approach to problem solving an analysis with excellent follow-through.

·         Facility for learning new software.

 

Desired

·         MLS, MLIS, or other relevant degree, or equivalent work experience.

·         Familiarity with automated library systems and information technologies

·         Previous experience working with library vendors and/or bibliographic utilities

·         Previous experience working with an Innovative system

·         Previous experience working in a UNIX environment
