Position Overview
Long Beach Community College District is currently seeking one full-time tenure track Librarian commencing with the 2011-2012 academic year*. The primary assignment involves providing a wide-range of library services at the Pacific Coast Campus. This includes but is not limited to, coordinating and expanding outreach services to the college community, reference, library orientations and workshops, library credit classes in both face-to-face and online environments, collection development, creation and design of instructional materials, and other duties as assigned to guarantee the smooth functioning of the Library. This assignment also includes curriculum development, participation in the shared governance process through work in normal professional activities, committee work, and student activities. The assignment may be at any of the College's teaching locations and involve both day and evening assignments.


Qualifications:
Minimum:
  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in library science, or library and information science OR possession of a valid California Community College Instructor Credential OR the equivalent
AND
  • Evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated interest in teaching with a commitment to student learning.
  • Ability to create student-focused instructional materials and utilize web-design tools to facilitate instructional goals, including assessing the effectiveness of instruction, learning, and programs.
  • Experience with design and implementation of outreach programs that promote library services and resources.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well both independently and collaboratively with colleagues, faculty and staff in a rapidly changing and dynamic environment.
  • Experience conducting in-depth reference interviews and familiarity with print and electronic reference tools.
  • Knowledge of current trends and resources in instruction and reference.  
  • Demonstrated experience using new and emerging technologies, services and multimedia.
  • Evidence of leadership in the development of web-based services and substantial contribution to online content.
  • Knowledge of web-development tools and proven ability to create dynamic web pages.
  • Experience creating and maintaining blogs, wikis, RSS and content-management systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to discern web trends and investigate their application in academic libraries.
  • Previous collaboration in providing instruction and information assistance to faculty and students.
  • Experience serving on faculty and administrative committees and participation in all professional activities required of faculty librarians.
  • Experience in assessing and developing print and electronic collections in support of the evolving curriculum.
  • Demonstrated commitment to public service, with effective interpersonal, verbal, written, and online communication skills.
  • Evidence of the ability to use a variety of strategies that encourage retention while successfully challenging diverse student populations with a wide variance in learning styles and information-seeking skills and different levels of technological competence.
Additional Information:
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Salary range of $50,555 - $78,574 is commensurate with academic preparation and experience. The District provides medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee.
 
*Positions will commence in Fall 2011 and Spring 2012 as determined by the District.
