Description
POSITION SUMMARY
Responsible for the bibliographic control of items selected to be added to the collection in accordance with the policies of the Distributed eLibrary; maintaining records of cataloging activities for reports, etc. Participate in general orientation activities, other library functions. Participation on committees, teams, task forces, and involvement in special projects is expected as deemed necessary or as are assigned by the Manager, eAccess Services, or the Director. Scheduled for duty at the circulation desk in agreement with the Manager, Information Services. Involved in the collection analysis process.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Create original catalog records; prepare and enter bibliographic records into OCLC for shared cataloging and interlibrary loan needs.
2. Prepare, enter, or establish bibliographic records, (name, subject, and series authority records) into the Library's automated catalog (OPAC), following international standards and withdrawal of items when no longer available.
3. Assign NLM classification numbers and MeSH subject headings to catalog records.
4. Ensure the integration and web accessibility of the Library's electronic resources by maintaining the hypertext links.
5. Participate in planning circulation policies with other sections of the Library.
6. Work closely with the Library Systems staff in maintaining the integrity of the data contained in the Millennium system.
7. Participate in long-range and strategic planning exercises for future automation activities and keep manuals updated.
8. Engage in scholarship resulting in publications, conference presentations and other evidence of scholarly efforts, including continuing education activities.
9. Scheduled at the circulation desk four hours a week.
10. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
* Masters degree in library and/or Information science from an ALA accredited institution with at least 3 years of experience in cataloging and maintenance of print and electronic resources. Experience with Innovative Interfaces Inc.'s Millennium system is preferred. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following competencies:
* Knowledge of the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2nd revision, and subsequent updates.
* Cataloging print, non-print, and electronic format materials and Experience using OCLC (a world-wide bibliographic utility used in cataloging).
* Ability to organize, prioritize, and be attentive to detailed work.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills are important as well as the ability to work with a diverse clientele.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
1. Experience with Innovative Interfaces Inc.'s Millennium system.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
* Some bending and lifting (up to 20kg) may be required.
* Service provision could require crossing distances within the building to respond to requests for assistance.
