Director of Library Technologies and Systems

 

The Head of Library Technologies and Systems for the University of South Carolina Libraries provides key leadership for the Libraries’ information technology infrastructure and services, including supervision of the Libraries’ technology activities and staff.

 

This position oversees library technology projects and systems, and works with system vendors, programmers, librarians, faculty, students and staff, University Technology Services, and public end-users to develop, evaluate, implement, and support a variety of systems. Services and systems currently include: the Libraries’ Integrated Library System (Innovative Interfaces’ Millennium and Encore systems), the Libraries’ multiple Web sites, Media Production Development, Technology Lounge and library computing areas, servers, and interfaces; major applications include interlibrary loan (OCLC ILLIAD), Innovative Interfaces’ Integrated Library Systems (ILS), USC Digital Collections (CONTENTdm), Institutional Repository (Digital Commons), and provision of staff and public computing applications.

 

This position reports to the Dean of Libraries, contributes to the profession through service and scholarly activities, and participates in faculty governance activities within the Libraries and University.

 

Specific Responsibilities:

 

Manage the Library Technologies department of six full-time technical faculty and staff, two part-time staff, and between 15-20 students. 

 

Manage technology-related vendor relations.

 

Lead the (ILS) team and attend other functional subgroups’ meetings as necessary; provide oversight and management of technical support and coordination for ILS-related issues and functions.  Communicate necessary support and information to the regional and senior campuses.

 

Participate in the continual evaluation of the technologies. Ensure that the short- and long-range planning processes for Library Technologies are anticipatory, rather than reactive.

 

Participate in leadership within the Library Administrative Group, which helps to advise the Dean of Libraries in the development of Library-wide policies and guidelines.

 

Coordinate communications concerning library technologies-related issues, services, policies, and procedures with library staff, users, academic units served, and external partners.

 

Maintain current expertise through participation in workshops, classes, professional associations, and networks, and through continued awareness of the scholarly literature.

 

Represent the Library at local, regional, and national meetings, conferences and symposia, as assigned.

 

Other duties as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications:

 

Progressively responsible experience managing library systems.

 

Experience managing an integrated library management system.

 

Demonstrated personnel management experience, including hiring, training, and evaluation of staff.

 

Demonstrated experience in managing various technologies such as Application Systems, Electronic Resources, Server Infrastructure, Network Infrastructure, Public/Staff Computing areas, Digital Collections, Web Development, and emerging technologies.

 

Demonstrated experience with budgeting, planning, and project management, including the ability to prioritize and complete tasks in relation to library goals and objectives.

 

Evidence of excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

 

Demonstrated knowledge of issues and trends related to library technologies.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

ALA-accredited MLS or its equivalent.

 

Experience in academic libraries.

 

Experience with Innovative Interfaces’ Millennium system, OCLC’s ILLIAD system, CONTENTdm, and library digitization projects.

 

Knowledge of Web technologies, standards, and software; Unix and Windows operating systems; library information technology standards and protocols; proxy servers and remote patron authentication; database design, administration and reporting; common programming and scripting languages; and metadata standards.

Salary is dependent on qualifications and experience. This is a full-time, 12-month, unclassified, tenure-track, faculty status position with the rank of Librarian. Benefits include medical, dental, state retirement or optional retirement plan.
