Oregon State University Libraries invites applications for the position of History of Science Collections Librarian, a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, tenure track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level.
The History of Science Collections Librarian will be a member of the Libraries' Special Collections Archives Research Center and report to the center director. The Librarian will play a leading role in the acquisition, processing, preservation and access to the Libraries' history of science collections, and for providing research opportunities for historians of science through those unique collections. These collections include the AvaHelen and Linus Pauling Papers and related collections on modern science and technology. The Librarian, in collaboration with other departmental and library faculty and staff, will create digital access to those collections. The Librarian also has responsibility for the Libraries' rare book collections and directs various programs and events, such as the Linus Pauling Legacy Award. The Librarian is part of an energetic and skilled department which includes three tenure/ tenure track faculty, five professional faculty, two classified staff and many high-achieving student assistants.
Required qualifications include:
- MLS from an ALA accredited library program (or equivalent)
- Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in a manuscript, archival or special collection setting, including collections processing, preservation, development of digital collections and reference and instruction.
- Demonstrated knowledge of archival theory and concepts, including metadata schemes used in the development of finding aids in archival collections, such as Encoded Archival Description (EAD), Dublin Core, and Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard (METS).
- Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work with faculty, students, visiting scholars, and donors.
- A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
Preferred qualifications include:
- A graduate degree in a discipline related to strengths of the Center's History of Science holdings (History, Science, or History of Science).
- Collection development experience in an archives or special collection.
- Minimum of one year of supervisory experience.
- Demonstrated understanding of digitization efforts and knowledge of digital formats and standards.
