POSITION DESCRIPTION

Yale University Library (YUL) seeks an innovative and experienced leader to fill its senior technology position. A member of YUL’s executive team, and reporting to the University Librarian, the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) has responsibility for programmatic, strategic, budgetary, managerial and operational responsibilities for YUL digital library and information technology support throughout the YUL system. Additionally, the CTO will represent the goals and interests of YUL in University-wide and national endeavors.

As a result of significant personnel changes and organizational restructuring, the CTO will have the opportunity to realign the IT staff and technology infrastructure of YUL, as well as develop multi-year strategic planning initiatives that further YUL’s mission and goals.

The portfolio of activity under the CTO will include web development, digital asset management, infrastructure services, enterprise technologies, digital and persistent access, and workstation support. The CTO directly oversees a department of 15 FTE that rests within a library organization that has IT projects and additional IT staff distributed widely throughout. YUL’s expansive IT systems include one of the largest integrated library systems in the country, nearly half a petabyte of storage over 75 licensed, open-source and locally developed systems, and more than 1,000 workstations.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Within a highly collaborative environment, the CTO will be expected to undertake the following:

·         Develop a vision for information technology and identify opportunities to use emerging technologies to improve and enhance teaching, learning and scholarship

·         Forecast and advocate for technology services, equipment and support, and work with YUL and University managers to shape the appropriate mix of locally hosted and externally hosted support infrastructure

·         Lead IT staff in the areas of strategic planning, operations, budget, policy development, web strategies and large-scale IT systems projects

·         Define and develop YUL’s programs and strategies for a broad range of digital initiatives, including digital humanities and collection digitization in a uncommonly broad variety of formats, languages, and scripts

·         Direct the development of standards, processes and procedures for a wide variety of technology and digital initiatives within YUL and guide their adoption

·         Promote a customer services climate for faculty and students throughout campus, as well as internal YUL customers

·         Emphasize University collaboration and integration of library resources and services within the teaching, learning, research and service activities of the University

·         Serves on Library and University committees as appropriate and is active professionally

QUALIFICATIONS

·         Master's degree in computer science, information management, library science or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Appointment at the rank of Librarian IV/Band IV requires at least eight years relevant experience, at least five of which must be in a managerial or supervisory capacity in a library systems, higher education IT, museum, archives or other cultural heritage information environment. Appointment at the rank of Librarian V/Band V requires at least twelve years of relevant experience and professional achievements.

·          Demonstrated successful experience partnering with colleagues and clients to plan and develop IT solutions to meet library and academic needs

·         Broad knowledge of teaching, learning and scholarship practices enhanced by technology

·         Experience managing the full lifecycle of a portfolio of technical infrastructure including desktop deployment, computation and storage, online services and software development and deployment

·         Experience investigating, analyzing issues, and finding successful and creative solutions to assure programs and initiatives meet established library goals

·         Commitment to high quality and responsive service

·         Ability to work independently and collegially with teams and individuals across departments and organizations.

·         Well-developed managerial, financial management and problem-solving skills

·         Strong written, oral, and listening skills needed to persuasively communicate technical issues to faculty, staff, and students and to communicate the needs of faculty, staff, and students to a wide range of IT and library personnel.

·         Demonstrable commitment to mentoring and staff development

·         Coordination skills in the management of internally and externally-funded projects
