Director of the University Library
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks an engaged, visionary leader for the position of Director of the Andersen Library (Official Title: Director, Library (M) L2DM). This position will provide an opportunity to support and transform the library’s programs, its services and collections and to direct the evolving relationship between the library and the campus community.
Brief Description of Duties:
The Director of the University Library provides leadership through innovation by continuing to shape Library philosophy to meet the academic mission and strategic goals of the University. The Director guides planning, develops policy, manages the Library budget, supervises staff, and engages in grant development as well as internal/external fundraising. Most importantly, the Director is actively involved in promoting the academic work and scholarly agendas of students, faculty, and staff. S/He should be knowledgeable and passionate about the appropriate integration of traditional resources, emerging technologies, and technology-enhanced learning. As a member of the Academic Affairs Staff, the Director reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Externally, the Director serves as primary liaison between the University Library and the larger professional library world, including active participation in the Council of University of Wisconsin Libraries, and other local, regional, and national library groups. The Director is an advocate for the Library and seeks to build partnerships on and off campus to enhance the Library’s mission and promote student learning and engagement. The Director is central to ongoing efforts to integrate the services and resources of the Library with UW-Whitewater’s dynamic and interdisciplinary curriculum to meet campus goals and objectives. The successful candidate should be accessible and approachable, an excellent communicator and listener, committed to staff development, and will foster a working environment that encourages collaboration and innovation. S/He will be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills. S/He will energetically pursue collaborative efforts to further the Library’s mission and will convey a welcoming attitude in an environment that values diversity and collegiality.
The University Library, with a staff of 24.5 FTE, including 11.5 librarians, provides access to 250 databases, including the shared electronic resources of the University of Wisconsin System libraries, 15,000 print and electronic journals, and more than 1 million items in various formats, supported through a shared discovery tool and supplemented by an efficient system-wide borrowing service. The Library is a selective U.S. Federal Depository Library and also participates in the Wisconsin Document Depository Program. The Library’s Special Collections Department houses the Leon Pescheret Collection and the Kenneth M. Hammer Collection of material relating to General George Armstrong Custer and the Battle of Little Big Horn.
Minimum Qualifications:
· A Master of Library Science (MLS) degree from an ALA accredited program.
· An advanced degree (masters or higher) in an academic field.
· Seven years of experience as director, dean, or department head of an academic, research, or special library.
· Demonstrated budget and financial management experience.
· Well-developed and collegial supervisory abilities and management skills.
· Excellent communication skills.
· Experience in effective strategic planning and assessment and evaluation of Library services.

Founded in 1868, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater is a regional comprehensive university with an enrollment of more than 12,000 students. UW-Whitewater has reached record enrollment four of the last five years and offers 50 majors in four colleges. UW-Whitewater also offers 15 master's degree programs and recently added a Doctorate of Business Administration.
