VS: [IFLA-LPD] Quick question re dyslexia

Dear Karen,

Celia too serves persons with all kinds of print disabilities, including persons with dyslexia. The Finnish law changed in 1978; until then the library was only meant for persons with visual impairments.

In 2015, 63% of Celia’s all users had a visual impairment, 21% had other print disabilities and 16% had dyslexia.

In 2015, 40% of Celia’s new users had a visual impairment, 27% had other print disabilities and 26% had dyslexia.

The trend has been the same during the past years; we’re reaching more users with different kinds of print disabilities.

Kind regards,

Minna.

[IFLA-LPD] SV: Quick question re dyslexia

Dear Karen,

MTM serve people with dyslexia and other impairment. In fact, this is the largest one of the user groups. MTM has about 45 000 active users (that is, they have been active during the past 12 months).

We are actually not allowed to register the actual reason for the reading impairment. But we assume that we have 590 users who are visually impaired. We assume this because they are registered as Braille users. But there might be visually impaired users who are not registrered as Braille users because they don´t use Braille.

Best regards

Kristina

Dear colleagues,

I have a quick question for you.

Are you serving people with perceptual disabilities such as dyslexia?

If so, what percentage of the people you serve have perceptual disabilities such as dyslexia, and what percentage are blind, visually impaired or physically disabled?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

[IFLA-LPD] RE: Quick question re dyslexia

Dear Karen,

ONCE's statutes don't allow us to serve persons with other disabilities than visual impairment, so we don't provide services to persons with dyslexia. That is why ONCE created the ONCE Foundation, which does provide services to persons with any other disability, especially persons with reduced mobility. The problem is that – as it is the case in many other countries - dyslexia is not officially recognized as a disability in Spain, and therefore they are not entitled to apply for the services provided by our Foundation. The seem to be terribly organized also, so it's difficult for us to help them through our Foundation.
