James Madison University Libraries & Educational Technologies seeks an enthusiastic, innovative Digital User Experience Librarian, a newly-defined position within Digital Services. The Digital User Experience Librarian will provide leadership in understanding users' technology needs and coordination in enhancing user experiences. James Madison University (JMU) is a public, comprehensive university of approximately 19,000 students located in the scenic Shenandoah Valley, two hours southwest of Washington, DC. The university has been ranked by U.S. News and World Report as the top-rated public regional Master's level university for seventeen consecutive years and is consistently named one of the nation's most wired universities. The Princeton Review Best Value Colleges for 2010 named the university one of the nation's 50 best value institutions. The university places a strong emphasis on undergraduate research and offers 31 Master's and seven doctoral degrees. The JMU Libraries are part of the Libraries and Educational Technologies (L&ET) division, which has the mission of enriching our communities by building learning and information environments where people connect with ideas and with each other to discover, create, and share knowledge. JMU Libraries includes Carrier Library, East Campus Library, and the Music Library. Digital Services is a unit within Public Services, and supports the public website for JMU Libraries, and public and staff computing for all of L&ET. This position is physically located within Carrier Library. Provides leadership in user research related to web services and public computing within JMU Libraries. Coordinates and manages web and computing projects to support and enhance our users' online experiences. Serves as one of two faculty librarians within the Digital Services unit and works closely with all unit members (web manager, designers, programmers, and desktop support staff) to make strategic, iterative, and programmatic web and computing improvements to enhance user experiences. Manages an established usability testing program. Leads efforts to learn about users' technology needs and expectations, working closely with the Planning and Assessment unit. Anticipated initiatives include but are not limited to increasing the libraries' current use of Google Urchin, Google Analytics, search logs, and direct interactions with users. Partners with Public Service and Technical Service units responsible for services, instruction and research. Anticipated collaborative projects include mobile computing initiatives, social networking, and online help. Supervises Digital User Experience Specialist and reports to the Director of Digital Services. Serves as a liaison librarian to an academic department with responsibilities for information literacy, collection development, research assistance, and outreach. Serves on L&ET and University committees. Participate in library-wide activities and represent the Library and the University in a variety of groups and forums. | |
Required Qualifications: MLS from ALA-accredited library program. Experience with web analytics, usability testing, or other user research. Exceptional enthusiasm for technology in support of libraries and higher education. Demonstrated ability to identify and evaluate effectiveness of technology to meet user needs. Demonstrated project management experience. Demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively. Excellent organizational and time-management skills. Strong public service and user orientation. Preferred Qualifications: Experience providing reference service or instruction in an academic library. Experience with collection development or other liaison responsibilities. Experience with library technology use of open source and emerging technologies. Understanding of information literacy best practices. | |
