The Board is currently seeking an energetic new leader to serve as Chief Executive Officer for the organization and build on its already outstanding program of services to achieve even greater levels of excellence and community participation. The award-winning Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library—the American Library Association’s “Library of the Future for 2009”—is an independent library district with a permanent tax rate exclusively dedicated to public library services. Governed by a seven-member Board of Trustees, the Library staff (400FTEs) and volunteers (448) serve 800,000+ citizens in Indianapolis and Marion County utilizing a budget of $45 million to operate 23 locations, including a stunning new Central Library, the Children’s Museum’s InfoZone, and an active bookmobile. Named a Four-Star Library by Library Journal for the past two years, the Library celebrated 5.1 million patron visits and a 16.6 million circulation in 2010. The Library Foundation provides substantial support funding 75% of the Library’s programming.
Indianapolis, the state capital and county seat of Marion County, is Indiana's largest city, the 12th largest city in the U.S., the second largest city in the Midwest, and one of the fastest growing regions in the United States. Historically focused on government and industry, Indianapolis today offers a diversified economy in the fields of education, health care, and finance. Responsibilities: The Chief Executive Officer is responsible for working with the Library Board to develop long-term plans and directions for the Library; planning and directing the overall operations and management of the Library; providing effective team development and leadership to the staff; working collaboratively with civic organizations and community agencies; and working effectively with elected officials at the state and county level. The CEO functions with a maximum degree of latitude for independent action within the scope of the organizational policy set by the Library Board. See CEO for the complete job description.
Qualifications: an MLS from an ALA-accredited program and ability to qualify for Indiana Librarian I certification; ten years of progressively responsible experience in library work and at least six years of administrative duties including responsible experience in library management and administration, finance and budget administration, personnel management, delivery systems for library services, library automation and fundraising. Experience in an urban public library system, experience working in a union environment, and success reporting to a policy-making board are highly desirable.
Compensation: The starting salary range is $125,000-150,000 with a competitive benefits package.
