Departmental Overview
In addition to maintaining the metadata within the Library's catalog OskiCat, Catalog & Metadata Services is responsible for the cataloging and physical treatment of all new monographs and serials in all formats and languages (except Chinese, Japanese, and Korean) for the UC Berkeley Main and subject specialty libraries. The Department works closely with Library Applications & Publishing to load vendor records, on projects to improve catalog quality, and to identify and create non-MARC metadata for digital library projects. The Library Applications & Publishing Group (LAP) provides technical support for Library, including developing, purchasing and/or supporting all types of hardware platforms and software applications. LAP has primary responsibility for supporting and building UC Berkeley Library's Integrated Library System (ILS), Digital Library, and web presence.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Metadata Management Unit within the Library's Catalog & Metadata Services Department (C&MS), this position works with a workleader in the Library Applications and Publishing (LAP) unit within the Library Systems Office (LSO). The Metadata Analyst position serves as an important bridge between the two Library units. The Metadata Analyst provides metadata analysis, ingest, and management services within the Catalog & Metadata Services Department and Library Applications & Publishing. Resolves structural and content errors, omissions, and ambiguities that may result in problems that affect access to library research resources and broad aspects of user comprehension. Engages in post-ingest metadata cleanup services and projects as needed. Within the Metadata Management Unit, collaborates with others to ensure the creation and management of quality metadata across Library information databases and systems. Liaises with Library staff within and beyond C&MS and LAP to identify and plan metadata service projects. This may include advising Library units on metadata issues and workflows, participating in workflow analysis and optimization, and identifying and advising project or unit leaders on best practices. Works in partnership with Library research resource vendors on issues of metadata availability, delivery, and content.
Required Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to write technical specifications.
- Advanced knowledge of national cataloging standards and tools, especially: OCLC, Anglo American Cataloging Rules, RDA, Library of Congress classification and subject headings.
- Detailed understanding of MARC formats and standards for both bibliographic and authority data, including specific fields and their function.

- The hourly salary is $25.14 - $31.13
