Departmental Overview

In addition to maintaining the Library's catalog OskiCat, the Catalog & Metadata Services Department is responsible for cataloging and physical treatment of all new monographs and serials in all formats and languages (except Chinese, Japanese, and Korean) for the UC Berkeley Main and subject specialty libraries.

Responsibilities

Creates and upgrades metadata/catalog records for materials in all formats. May provide metadata for foreign language materials as necessary. Performs complex database maintenance by resolving conflicts, improving, or correcting bibliographic, item, holdings and/or authority records in the UCB online catalog, OskiCat. Performs problem analysis for NRLF, subject specialty, and other library collections. May work with special workflows such as: analytics, replacements, and multi-volume monographs. May contribute authority records to national cooperative cataloging program and/or may perform complex authority and headings work in local database. Analyzes, evaluates, interprets, and revises or proposes revisions to established guidelines; writes documentation and provides training pertaining to unit procedures and policies. May serve as an expert liaison to other Library units.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience recognizing and resolving catalog errors
  • One or more years of experience performing copy and original cataloging for monographic resources and/or serials
  • Functional knowledge of national cataloging documentation and tools (i.e. OCLC, RDA, RDA toolkit, PCC BSR, Anglo American Cataloging Rules, MARC21 formats, Library of Congress Classification and Subject Analysis)
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong service orientation
  • Reading fluency in one or more Western European, Eastern European, South Asian or South East Asian Languages
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills together with attention to detail for complex, possibly repetitive, detail-oriented work.
  • Ability to participate in multiple concurrent projects in a given timeframe, monitor project workflow, provide regular reports or updates as necessary, and meet project deadlines
  • Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience using the Millennium Integrated Library System
    • Experience with serials, especially holdings statements and holdings records
    • Experience working with and/or creating non-MARC metadata
