Collection Assessment Librarian
Rice University is seeking a highly motivated and service-oriented Collection Assessment Librarian. The successful candidate will support the Library’s mission by providing data and analysis to inform strategic collection making for Fondren Library. The position is also responsible for collection development in multiple areas of the natural sciences and/or engineering disciplines, serves as a liaison to the corresponding departments and contributes to reference services and user education. The position reports to the Head of Reference Services.
Responsibilities: Collaborates across the department to provide data and analysis regarding collections usage and cost benefits, providing data-driven bases for collection selection and de-selection. Provides general and specialized reference assistance and user education services to students, faculty and members of the public (virtually and face-to- face).Manages a library collection, including identification, selection, evaluation, vendor negotiations and de-selection of teaching and research-level library materials in a variety of formats. Consults with and advises academic departments on the selection and effective use of library materials. Provides proactive and responsive service to faculty and students in assigned departments, including orientations, research guidance, online subject and course guides and class instruction. Participates in library/campus research support service initiatives including those related to research data management, curation and preservation. Assists in educating and informing faculty and graduate students on scholarly communication issues such as open access initiatives, digital publishing and digital curation. Commitments to professional development are expected.
Required Qualifications:
-ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library Science
-Demonstrated interest in and enthusiasm for developing knowledge of science/engineering literature and information sources for use in developing research-level collections.
-Strong analytical skills and experience with statistical tools, including producing reports, visualizing data and communicating findings.
-Experience with computer and telecommunications technologies for information management and collaboration.
-Excellent organizational, interpersonal, teaching and communication skills, including the ability to actively listen to, understand and articulate the needs of users.
-Ability to apply new technologies to library services.
-Demonstrated knowledge of the scientific research process and the impact of e-science methodologies upon scientific research.
-Working knowledge of basic reference sources, including print, online databases and the use of the internet in the research process.
Preferred qualifications:
-Undergraduate degree in a science or engineering discipline or demonstrated previous professional-level collection development experience in a science or engineering discipline in an academic library.
-Advanced degree in relevant scientific discipline.
-Two years previous professional experience providing instructional and research services in an academic library.
-Project management skills.
-Reading knowledge of a foreign language.
Salary & benefits: $59,000 minimum, with hiring salary commensurate with experience and qualifications; no state or local income tax; 21 benefit days; 8 study days; a range of retirement options including TIAA/CREF; health and life insurance; and tuition waiver.
