The George T. Harrell Health Sciences Library at Penn State Hershey seeks an early career Collection Access and Support Services Librarian. The incumbent will report to the Associate Director of the Library. This is an entry level, multi-year fixed term faculty position. Recent graduates are encouraged to apply.

 

Position Summary:

 

The Collection Access and Support Services Librarian will have primary responsibility for the maintenance of stable and continual access to electronic journals and other resources through management tools similar to Ebsco A-to-Z and Serials Solutions Summon. He/she will communicate with vendors and University Libraries personnel to troubleshoot and resolve access issues and maintain licensing and use data of electronic resources. In coordination with public services and technical support staff, will develop and produce statistical reports on resource usage and will also coordinate with the Collection Development/Digital Resources Management Librarian in applying this information to collection development functions. In coordination with Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Librarian, will perform complex searching to support ILL borrowing and will support open access initiatives such as NIH public access mandate. Will provide general reference service, research support, and participate in user-centered library instruction. She/he will serve as a liaison to one or more academic departments and will be a member of the Public Services Team. Will contribute as a member of the Library Advisory Team, and will participate in strategic planning and evaluation of library programs, services, and resources. Critical skills include the ability to function effectively in a team environment, flexibility and the capacity to embrace change in a dynamic and evolving organization, and a facility for cross-departmental communications. He/she will contribute to the profession through librarianship, teaching & learning, service, research and involvement in professional organizations.

 

Qualifications:

• MLS/MLIS or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited institution.
• Demonstrated experience or relevant coursework with resource management tools and technologies.
• Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, service oriented, rapidly changing environment to accomplish mutual goals.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills and a strong public service orientation.

 

Preferred:

• Some experience in an academic health sciences or medical facility library.
• Experience in the sciences.
• Experience with database searching with an emphasis on medicine and health related resources.
• Demonstrated commitment to professional development and potential for promotion.

Penn State College of Medicine at Penn State Hershey Medical Center confers the doctor of medicine degree and, in conjunction with Penn State’s Graduate School, offers doctor of philosophy degrees in anatomy, biochemistry, and molecular biology, bioengineering, bioinformatics and genomics, cell and molecular biology, chemical biology, genetics, immunology and infectious diseases, integrative biosciences, microbiology and immunology, molecular medicine, molecular toxicology, neuroscience, pharmacology, and physiology. The Penn State Hershey campus is located in Hershey, PA a suburban community approximately twelve miles from Harrisburg, the state capital. The fourth largest employer in Central Pennsylvania, Penn State’s Milton S. Hershey Medical Center provides jobs for more than 9000 area residents. Hershey Foods Corporation, also headquartered in Hershey, is Central Pennsylvania’s second largest industry. Hershey is within a 3 hour drive of New York, Washington D.C., and Philadelphia.

 

The George T. Harrell Health Sciences Library is currently in the planning phases for a complete renovation which will begin in late 2015. This renovation will create technology-rich spaces for collaboration and quiet study, a presentation recording studio, and a technology “sandbox” for innovation in education and research.

 

Compensation: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include liberal vacation, excellent insurance and health care coverage, state or TIAA/CREF retirement options, and educational privileges.
