The IUB Libraries provide strong collections, quality service and instructional programs, and leadership in the application of information technologies. The collections support every academic discipline on campus and include more than 6.6 million books, journals, maps, films, and audio/visual materials in over 900 languages. Users can access more than 400 databases, 43,000 electronic journals, and 224,000 electronic books, as well as locally developed digital content. Of particular note are the 8-million volume high-density Auxiliary Library Facility (ALF) for preservation and access to the libraries’ collections and archives, and the Lilly Library, the rare books, manuscripts, and special collections library of the Indiana University Libraries, Bloomington.
The IUB Libraries are active members of regional and national associations and consortia including the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), the Digital Library Federation (DLF), the Hydra community, and is a founding member of HathiTrust, a shared digital repository. IU is the principal investigator for Kuali Open Library Environment (OLE) and is working with academic library partners to develop a next generation open source library management system.
The Indiana University Bloomington Libraries seek a dynamic, innovative, and service-oriented individual for the position of Image Technologies and Visual Literacy Librarian in the Arts & Humanities Department. The person in this position will serve as the primary point of contact for students, faculty, and staff in the School of Fine Arts/Department of the History of Art with questions related to finding and using digital image resources. Additionally, the incumbent will serve as the visual resources contact person for library staff and for departments across the IUB campus.
The Arts & Humanities Department of the Indiana University Bloomington Libraries includes six librarians and two FTE support staff who are responsible for all aspects of collection development/management, reference, and outreach to students and faculty in the Arts and Humanities.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting to the Head of the Fine Arts Library, the individual in this position will provide reference and instructional support related to finding and using digital images and will oversee collection management for the building of teaching-focused image collections for departments and units across the IUB campus. This position will participate in the activities and initiatives of the Arts & Humanities Department to provide the expertise needed in the traditional reference setting and in the digital research environment of the Scholars’ Commons, providing reference services, collection support, and training for the research community. Additional responsibilities include:
· Managing and developing teaching image collections for History of Art and other departments across campus who use images for teaching and research. Consults closely with faculty about image acquisitions and accessions image orders for inclusion in the library’s teaching image repository (currently ARTstor’s Shared Shelf).
· Provides research and publishing support and creates and fosters digital technologies, in collaboration with faculty, in order to strengthen teaching and learning through promotion and outreach for visual materials across IUB.
· Provides instruction to faculty and students in best practices for presentation of images, search and retrieval of image content, and provides visual literacy instruction to groups and individuals through research consultations, workshop presentations, and course-integrated instruction sessions.
· Curates digital displays of new materials/collections in public areas and makes use of social media tools and outlets for promotion of image resources, collections, and services.
· Fosters critical partnerships with the Office of Scholarly Publishing (OSP) and the Center for Innovative Teaching & Learning (CITL), and will maintain a high profile in the IUB Scholars’ Commons.
· Responsible for digital image metadata creation and delivery in collaboration with the Digital Library Program to support best practices in digital image collections.
· Acts as new technologies expert within the Arts and Humanities Department. The incumbent will also explore potential innovation in social networking and open-access platforms, and collaborations across the IU Library system and potentially with the CIC.
· Trains and supervises Fine Arts Library temporary employees in tasks related to digital image production, image cataloging, and image technologies/research support.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
· ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS) or equivalent education or experience or a graduate degree or equivalent experience in an art, art history, or design field.
· Strong public service orientation.
· Knowledge of, enthusiasm for, and experience in the application of new technologies in the evolving academic information environment.
· Ability to work in a team environment and build working relationships with campus colleagues.
· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work well with a diverse population of faculty, students, and academic colleagues.
· Experience in information/visual literacy instruction.
· Demonstrated ability to deliver in-person and online reference services.
· Ability to meet the requirements of a tenure-track librarian position.
Preferred:
· Two or more years of experience in an academic/research library or in a visual resources or museum setting.
· Knowledge of instructional design, pedagogy, and assessment principles for effective information/visual literacy instruction.
· Ability to handle multiple responsibilities in a rapidly changing environment.
· Knowledge and understanding of key issues and trends that affect academic libraries and higher education.
· Supervisory experience.
