Purpose of Position Professional position responsible for developing, teaching, and implementing academic research and information literacy skills campus-wide.
Essential Functions As subject specialist in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), will work closely with faculty/students in STEM areas, as well as with other subject specialist Librarians to provide discipline specific research and instructional services. Participates in collection development, general and specialized reference, and general information literacy instruction under Unit Heads of Reference, Collection Development, and Information Literacy Instruction. Provides specialized information literacy instruction in classroom settings in Library and across campus and online (Blackboard software) in science and engineering subjects. Collaborates with faculty to create curriculum-integrated class assignments and instructional sessions. Provides JCR/citation tracking instructional support to faculty in regards to their publication activities. Provides general and specialized reference and research assistance through regular assignments at Reference Desk. Keeps informed of latest development in STEM research and associated library support material. Prepares bibliographic guides, tutorials and informational publications. Maintains relevant Library topical web pages (LibGuides). Collaborates with other science and engineering librarians and specialists in collection development and weeding materials in assigned area. Participates in Library-wide activities and serves on appointed Library and University committees and organizations.
Marginal/Incidental functions Performs other duties as required.
Required qualifications M.L.S. from and ALA accredited library school. Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to interact successfully with all segments of the Library, University and community. Ability to work in a team environment: advises and consults with co-workers in a collegial atmosphere. Excellent written, oral and presentation skills. Familiarity with tools used in automated office environment. Substantial knowledge of software operation, the Internet, World Wide Web searching and OCLC, as they relate to instructional and reference services. Problem solving ability. Ability to plan, organize and implement projects successfully. Flexibility; able to adapt to new and unanticipated personnel and public service developments.
Preferred Qualifications Undergraduate degree or subject masters in the sciences and/or engineering. Experience with Internet, online catalogs and electronic databases. Professional public service work in an academic or research library. Demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging technologies related to research assistance and information literacy. Experience in bibliographic instruction. Experience creating instruction materials in electronic format. Familiarity with reference tools and indexes in electronic format, including Internet accessible resources. Experience in use of Blackboard, LibGuides Adobe Captivate and Flash. Experience with library automated systems (e.g. OPAC, ILL, Acquisitions, Circulation). Familiarity with, or course work in, government documents. Familiarity with national issues and trends in academic librarianship, particularly with those relating to STEM services. Working knowledge of at least one non-English modern European language, Spanish preferred.
Working conditions Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation Must have physical ability to stand and provide service at public service desks for up to 2-3 hrs at a time, to maneuver in Reference Dept. offices and book stack areas in order to use library materials and computers when assisting patrons.

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
