Head of Collection Management
Assistant Librarian/Associate Librarian
Indiana University Bloomington Libraries
The Indiana University Bloomington Libraries are seeking nominations and applications for a dynamic and innovative individual to fill the newly defined position of Head of Collection Management. The person hired will be charged with furthering the vision for the future of the IUB Libraries’ physical collections via data analysis, problem solving in a dynamic organization, and the leadership of a geographically dispersed staff.
As the 2010 recipient of the ACRL Research Library of the Year award, the IU Bloomington Libraries (http://www.libraries.iub.edu) rank among the leading academic library systems in North America. The IUB Library staff takes pride in the strong collections, quality services and instruction programs, and the leadership of the library in the application of information technologies. The various IUB Libraries are active members of regional, national and international associations and consortia including the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), the Digital Library Federation (DLF), and are a founding member of HathiTrust. In addition, the Indiana University Libraries are the principle investigator for Kuali Open Library Environment (Kuali OLE) which is working with academic partners to develop a next generation open source library management system.
The Ruth Lilly Auxiliary Library Facility (ALF), a high-density state-of-the-art shelving facility designed to preserve and provide access to 6.4 million volumes, provides excellent delivery services for faculty and students locally and around the world. In addition to holding low-use items from the Libraries’ General Collections, the ALF serves as secure storage and delivery for the Lilly Library’s rare books and manuscripts, most of the University Archives collections, and a large film collection.
Reporting to the Associate Dean for Collection Development and Scholarly Communication, the Head of Collection Management will provide the IUB libraries with oversight and coordination of the general management of the physical collections, including determination of shelving locations and workflows for transferring collections. In close collaboration with collection managers and faculty, and in the context of ongoing strategic planning efforts, s/he will continue to evolve a vision for the management of the IUB Libraries’ physical collections, participate in the development of excellent delivery services and serve a central role in the implementation of the recently launched CIC Shared Print Repository (CIC SPR). S/he will take the lead in identifying, gathering, and analyzing data that will guide the reshaping of the collections, striving to meet the on-going and changing needs of researchers and scholars in all disciplines across the University.
The Head of Collection Management will supervise three library units tasked with the management of the physical collection: ALF, ALF Internal Processing (AIP), and Stacks Maintenance. There is one additional full-time support staff position reporting to this position. The Head of Collection Management will chair the AIP Steering Committee, which is charged with coordinating collections transfers; work closely with the Preservation Department in planning for the preservation and conservation of the physical collections; and work with units that provide delivery services in a distributed physical collection.
