JOB SUMMARY
The work is performed at the Birmingham Public Library Central and all locations.  This is a professional position requiring knowledge of library principles, practices and policies.  It involves performing a wide range of professional library work specializing in technologies for hands-on exploration, creation, and participatory learning. This position supports hands-on, project-based, and interest-driven learning; serves as a competitive advantage for students seeking to innovate; and provides a place for critical and creative thinking. This position will serve as the library's expert on the development and operation of makerspaces and other creative learning spaces and the primary driver for the development of these spaces within the Birmingham Public Library system. Work is reviewed on the basis of results achieved. Works under the general guidance and direction of the Public Services coordinator

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Reports to Public Services Coordinator.
Creates education-based initiatives that are engaging and interactive and incorporates the use of instructional technology, maker space, and computer-based programming for student, family and other audiences.
Coordinates and participates in the implementation and use of technologies that support learning in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) disciplines.
Establishes relationships and collaborates with external partners to create maker-related programming and develops Birmingham Public Library as a resource for STEAM learning.
Develops and maintains departmental budgets, reports, statistics and supply inventory.
Researches, develops and prototypes innovative activities and maintains all materials, tools and equipment, including collaborating with the IT department on hardware and software needs.
Interviews, selects and trains new employees; trains and makes assignments to subordinates; assists in the evaluation of their performance; and counsels them on the solution of new or difficult problems.
Trains library staff on incorporating creative technology into programming.
Keeps abreast of current developments in the field through attendance at and participation in conferences and workshops and through programs of continuing education, professional reading, and participation in professional groups.
Conducts interviews and makes hiring recommendations for department staff positions.
Plans and oversees projects, evaluates workloads and adjusts staff assignments accordingly.
Organizes and provides outreach to neighborhood associations, schools, and other library partners.
Attends BPL and JCLC meetings (i.e., Collection Management and BPL and JCLC Youth Services, Reference Roundtable, etc.).
Related work as required.

Demonstrated success developing and evaluating educational programs; selecting and successfully operationalizing innovative programs.
Demonstrated proficiency and comfort with a variety of hardware and software products.
Experience managing complex projects, resulting in measurable successes and growth.
Comfortable with a hands on approach, particularly an ability to improvise with audiences of varied ages, the use of hand tools, electronics, computer software, hardware and various other technologies and skills.
Demonstrated ability in physical computing, hardware and software, video and audio production, and desktop fabrication.
Demonstrated success building learning experiences and community relationships.
Ability to maintain good relations with the public and other staff, individually and in general, shows tact and courtesy.
Ability to handle routine problems and keep supervisor informed of departmental and system-wide needs and concerns.
Ability to educate and encourage advocacy for the library.
Excellent oral and written communication skills with strong emphasis on instruction and public speaking.
Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
Ability to interpret library policies to the community groups and to the public.
Ability to use independent judgment within established guidelines.
Ability to be flexible, responsive, collaborative, and self-directed.
Advanced knowledge of effective grant writing, monitoring and report preparation processes.
Advanced knowledge of or extensive experience with creative learning, participatory learning, or collaborative learning theories and practices and their implications for library programming.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Physical requirements include the ability to stand for long periods of time; eyesight sufficient to read and understand information from microforms and PC monitors, and the manual dexterity necessary for the regular use of PCs; ability to stoop, twist, turn and move materials from place to place in the library.  Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The candidate must possess an undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year college or university supplemented by the attainment of a master's degree in library science from an ALA accredited institution.  A minimum of two years in a professional library position working in a supervisory function is preferred. Background check is required.

BENEFITS
80 hours biweekly, Grade 25, Full-time, Salary ranging from $47,902.40 to $74,380.80.  All positions may include morning, afternoon, evening and weekend hours, including Sunday.  Employees may be required to adapt to future schedule and location changes depending on library needs. Excellent benefits, such as major medical health coverage, dental and life insurance, pension plan, sick and vacation leave, along with 12 paid holidays per year.
