Penn Libraries seeks an accomplished, energetic, service-oriented and creative librarian to serve the Univ. of Pennsylvania’s Archaeology & Anthropology Museum Library. This position carries a number of responsibilities including serving as the primary library research and collections liaison to the Department of Anthropology; supporting the core curatorial areas within the Penn Museum; and supporting the museum’s departments of Academic Engagement and Learning Programs. This position will provide liaison services to Museum curators, keepers, staff, and related interdisciplinary and area studies constituencies on campus. Also critical to this position is creative engagement with the wide variety of graduate and undergraduate students affiliated with the museum. The Museum Library provides access to and support for new, innovative forms of digital scholarship, scholarly communication, and pedagogy in ancient, archaeological, and anthropological studies and this position will be central to helping coordinate these conversations with a diverse group of librarians, faculty, students, and museum
The museum librarian will:
Build current and retrospective collections in all formats; manage general and restricted endowed acquisitions funds; coordinate preservation, digitization, and other aspects of collection maintenance, including selection for offsite storage; and provide general and specialized research assistance for Penn Museum staff, Penn faculty and students, visiting research fellows and scholars from the US and abroad. The librarian provides public services and bibliographic instruction in the use of print and electronic resources in various library and classroom settings; creates resource guides and web sites to assist students and researchers; consults with staff in the Information Processing Center to facilitate timely acquisitions and processing; and coordinates service and collection policies closely with other subject specialist and area studies librarians. This position also will have some supervisory responsibilities including oversight of general circulation and access services, document delivery services, and library facilities. This librarian represents Penn in the relevant regional, national, and international professional and scholarly organizations.
Under the supervision of the Fisher Fine Arts Head Librarian, this position falls within the Teaching, Research, and Learning Directorate.
Requirements:
- An ALA-accredited Master's degree in library science or equivalent combination of education and professional library experience
- Demonstrated academic strength in a field pertinent to Anthropology, Archaeology, or Museum Studies.
- 3-5 years professional library work in an academic or research library
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work successfully and collegially with a diverse group of colleagues and scholars
- A demonstrated understanding of current developments in information and museum studies
- Significant experience with research tools available for the use of researchers in the humanities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Graduate degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or Museum Studies
- Broad familiarity with academic research in the fields represented within the Museum;
- Reading proficiency in a foreign language
- Experience conducting instruction in an academic setting or experience with public outreach programs or equivalent experience with instruction, outreach, and assistance for individual researchers
- Supervisory experience
- Experience managing budgets
- A record of demonstrated experience with technology and digital projects
- Strong familiarity with teaching and research technologies supported by an academic or research library
- Demonstrated success working collaboratively with all levels of users and staff, across all functions of the library system
- Ability to work effectively in a rapidly changing environment
