There are things about this job that may not be evident from the job ad. Hattiesburg is a great place to live. The cost of living is very low in Hattiesburg, MS. Housing is extremely reasonable, and the commute to work is minimal (I have a 5 minute commute.). The beach is a little over an hour away. New Orleans is an easy hour and a half. There are many nearby airports, so getting in and out isn’t an option.
Special Collections at USM has some really amazing collections. In Historical Manuscripts, the main collecting areas include civil rights in Mississippi, the timber/lumber industries in the area, Civil War, and many others. We are very fortunate to have a lot of interaction with faculty across campus who collaborate with us on events and instruction. At a risk of overselling this job, I can’t help but state that the faculty and staff in the department are very capable and tons of fun to work with.
