The Head of Collections, Research, and Instruction (CRI) leads the department in the development and delivery of dynamic outreach services and programs devoted to meeting patrons' existing and emerging research needs. Current programs include provision of both physical and virtual reference services, research consultations, instructional services, and a library liaison program. The department head manages all aspects of the CRI department and actively engages with academic departments to ensure that the library provides high-quality, user-focused research and information services to University faculty, staff, and students as well as other authorized patrons.
This position is directly responsible for supervision, administration, and management of the department of Collections, Research, and Instruction. These activities include training, developing, and evaluating academic professionals (14.38 FTE) who actively support the research and educational missions of the University. Annually, the department answers nearly 19,000 reference questions and provides 800 research consultations and 300 instructional classes.
The department head is also responsible for directing the work of librarians as subject area bibliographers as they develop the general collections of the Lauinger Library in all formats. S/he also selects materials as a subject specialist. The department head monitors vendor approval plans and oversees applicable materials budgets and spending activity. Within the scope of his/ her responsibilities, the incumbent is responsible for collection management policy development and for alignment with collection development and scholarly publishing trends.
This position reports directly to the Associate University Librarian for Scholarly Resources along with the department heads for the Blommer Science Library, Copyright and Scholarly Communications, the Special Collections Research Center, and the Woodstock Theological Center Library.
Qualifications: Master's Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution, or similarly appropriate/equivalent advanced degree is required. A second Master's in an academic field related to the position or Georgetown's curricula is highly desirable along with a solid record of professional contributions in service and scholarship.
Minimum of 5 years of experience, at least 3 of which are in increasingly responsible management positions within research & instructional services in an academic or research library setting. Significant prior experience in collection development, analysis, and materials budget management required. Broad knowledge of reference & research resources, issues and trends; as well as thorough knowledge of research library collections and academic disciplines.
Reading knowledge of one modern or classical foreign language preferred, and demonstrated experience with current library systems, technologies, databases, and technical infrastructure. Intermediate to advanced proficiency with spreadsheet applications.
Strong commitment to engaging users and providing excellent public service. Demonstrated ability to analyze trends and to develop innovative services for optimal use of information resources. Experience in using data to assess service quality and make decisions on service directions. Demonstrated ability to initiate and manage projects efficiently in a complex and rapidly changing environment.
Demonstrated ability to lead a diverse staff and foster collegiality, to encourage change and innovation, and to engage professionals in the collaborative planning and delivery of user-centered services. Demonstrated teaching ability and experience with pedagogical methods to improve teaching quality. Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communications skills. Solid record of working collaboratively as well as independently.
