James Madison University Libraries seeks an innovative, service-oriented leader for the position of Director of Rose Library Services. Rose Library, a stunning facility opened in 2008, is home to the science, technology and health sciences collections.
James Madison University (JMU) is a public, comprehensive university of approximately 20,000 students located in the scenic Shenandoah Valley, two hours southwest of Washington, D.C. The university has been ranked by U.S. News and World Report as the top-rated public regional master's level university for seventeen consecutive years. The Princeton Review Best Value Colleges has named the university one of the nation's 50 best value institutions. The university places a strong emphasis on undergraduate research and offers 34 master's programs and seven doctoral programs.
The JMU Libraries are part of the Libraries and Educational Technologies division, which has the mission of enriching our communities by building learning and information environments where people connect with ideas and with each other to discover, create and share knowledge. The libraries include Carrier Library with collections supporting the arts, humanities and social sciences and also housing administration and technical services; Rose Library with collections supporting science, technology and health sciences; and the Music Library.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Director of Rose Library Services provides leadership for the planning, implementation, promotion and assessment of Rose Library services and programs, oversees all aspects of library services including information desk, access services, learning commons partnerships, outreach, liaison librarians and building operations, develops library programs targeted to support the science, technology and health departments and collaborates with colleagues across the libraries to develop integrated, innovative library services that support teaching and learning across the curriculum. The Director also oversees the dynamic Rose Library team including five librarians, six full-time staff, plus part-time and student staff, serves as a liaison librarian by providing library instruction, collection management and research services for an allied health program. The Director collaborates in the overall planning and management of the JMU Libraries and serves on the Libraries and Educational Technologies Management Council and reports to the Associate Dean for Public Services.
Qualifications:
Required qualifications include ALA-Accredited MLS, significant academic library experience including experience managing library services and supervising staff, knowledge of library service best practices, current issues and trends, commitment to providing excellent user-centered services, experience providing instruction, research or liaison services, collection development experience, excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational and project management skills, ability to supervise, guide and motivate staff and ability to lead creatively and collaboratively in a dynamic environment. Academic background or experience in a science, technology or health-related discipline is preferred. Faculty status requires potential to meet standards for tenure and promotion.
