Position Description:
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library seeks an innovative and service-oriented individual to provide subject expertise to support undergraduate and graduate-level instruction and research in biological sciences, biotechnology, and bioengineering fields. The Biosciences Librarian will serve as part of a team of librarians providing research support to the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS); Agriculture, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES); and Engineering. The incumbent will work with researchers in several departments and research centers including the Beckman Institute, the Institute for Genomic Biology, the School of Integrative Biology, the School of Molecular and Cellular Biology, the Department of Bioengineering, Illinois Natural History Survey, and others engaged in biological research or instruction. The incumbent will report to the head of the Funk (ACES) Library and have office space in both the Funk and Grainger Engineering Libraries. The successful candidate will establish collection priorities, provide information and instructional services, engage in data and research services, and develop expanded library services related to bioscience subject areas.
Responsibilities and Duties:
The Biosciences Librarian will contribute to the University Library’s service activities, collections, and expertise in the biological sciences. Specific responsibilities include:
· Initiate liaison and outreach relationships with relevant bioscience programs;
· Provide information and instructional services, both in person and online;
· Develop and manage library collections in all formats in areas of subject responsibility;
· Develop and maintain robust Internet sites and related digital resources;
· Develop data stewardship and research support services;
· Contribute to Library-wide information, instruction, collection development, and research support services;
· Participate in the provision of general reference services through scheduled reference desk hours and on-call reference service;
· Monitor trends in bioscience scholarly publishing and inform researchers about scholarly communications services and related library collection development;
· Conduct research in science and technology librarianship;
· Perform other duties as they arise.

The Grainger Engineering Library Information Center opened in 1994 and serves as a laboratory for enhanced information services and emerging information technologies. The Funk Library is located in a new, state-of-the art building built in 2001. Together the Grainger and Funk libraries are composed of 7.5 FTE faculty librarians and 4.25 FTE library graduate assistants. The Grainger Library serves the College of Engineering, including the Department of Bioengineering and a large biomedical group in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The Funk Library is the primary facility serving students and researchers in the areas of agriculture, biology, landscape architecture, and urban planning. The two libraries contain on-site computer instructional classrooms.
Qualifications:
Required: ALA-accredited Master’s degree or equivalent; degree in a biosciences discipline or 1-2 years of experience providing professional services to one or more bioscience disciplines in an academic, corporate, or research library; experience with online information resources and information management tools; commitment to provision of public services; demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with others in a team environment; evidence of flexibility and ability to thrive in a complex and fluid organizational environment; evidence of excellent communication and analytical skills.
Preferred: Advanced degree in a biosciences discipline; experience providing information and instructional services in an academic or research library; experience providing scholar support services such as scholarly communications services, bioinformatics, and/or e-science activities; experience building and sustaining library collections; experience creating and maintaining web pages for library users; ability to work cooperatively and effectively with all elements of an academically and culturally diverse community; evidence of research, publication, and service consonant with university standards for promotion and tenure.
Salary and Rank:
Salary commensurate with credentials and experience. Librarians have faculty rank, and must demonstrate excellence in librarianship, research, and university/professional/community service in order to meet university standards for tenure and promotion. Terms of Appointment:
Twelve-month appointment; 24 work days’ vacation per year; 11 paid holidays; 12 days annual sick leave (cumulative up to a maximum of 240 days) plus an additional 13 days (non-cumulative) per year if necessary. Health insurance, requiring a small co-payment, is provided to employees (coverage for dependents may be purchased); participation in the State Universities Retirement System is required upon appointment (8% of member's salary is withheld and is tax exempt until retirement); newly hired university employees are covered by the Medicare portion of Social Security and are subject to its deduction.
