POSITION SUMMARY
The University of Arizona Libraries seeks an Assistant Librarian/Archivist to meet the information needs of students, faculty, and customers of Special Collections by managing the processing of papers, records and congressional collections and associated electronic files; providing instruction on the use of archival collections, curating exhibits, and acquiring archival collections. Additionally, incumbent will contribute to the library/archival professions by fulfilling the responsibilities of a library faculty member through scholarship and service. SPECIAL COLLECTIONS
The University of Arizona Library Special Collections maintains collections of rare books and unique archival materials that make possible in-depth research on selected topics. The scope and diversity of Special Collections make it an important resource for the international academic community. Established in 1958 to house materials on Arizona, the Southwest, and the U.S./Mexico Borderlands, Special Collections now includes rare books, manuscript collections, photographs, and other materials in a wide variety of subject areas.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK PERFORMED
All work that addresses Special Collections' customer needs will be performed. Individuals can expect that this work will include team-wide and Library-wide work. As customers' needs change, work patterns may change. As a result, team and Library work is negotiated within the team, the end product being an agreement in writing defining performance expectations.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Processing of Collections (50%): Responsible for the general management of archival collections processing activities, including arrangement and description of personal papers, institutional records, and congressional collections.
2. Donor Relations (15%): Primarily responsible for the acquisition of Congressional collections and political papers. Other areas of responsibilities may be assigned as needed.
3. Collections Management (5%): Oversees all manuscript collections management activities, including accessions, de-accessions, organization, re-housing and shelving of collections.
4. Liaison to Udall Foundation (10%): Serves as primary liaison to Udall Foundation, including communications, grant management, contributions to annual reports, and coordination of related exhibits.
5. Training and Supervision (10%): Training and supervision of staff and students, specifically in the processing of archival collections, including the Udall Graduate Assistants.
6. Provide Reference Service in Special Collections (10%): Answers reference inquires on-site and via telephone, mail, and e-mail and using relevant social media tools. Develop and maintain in-depth knowledge of specialized collections.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
· A master’s degree in library/information science from an ALA-accredited institution.
· Minimum of 3 years of experience in the accessioning, appraisal and arrangement of congressional and other archival collections or a relevant combination of experience and education in the archival field.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
· Certification by the Academy of Certified Archivists.
· Familiarity with accepted conservation methods applied to archival collections of manuscripts, photographic materials and ephemera.
· Knowledge of MARC format and its attributes.
· Knowledge of archives related use of the Internet.
· Spanish language skills for arrangement and description of manuscript collections.
· Ability to communicate effectively and openly with colleagues and customers.
· Commitment to active participation in the library and archival professions.
· Commitment to the use and promotion of alternative as well as traditional means of access to information.
· Ability to work with diverse people and serve a diverse population.
· Ability to work in a team-based environment.
· Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
