Research Librarian for Western European Languages, Literatures and Cultures

 

In a widely collaborative, user-centered library environment, this position contributes to the development of new and ongoing library programs and services in support of research, teaching and learning in the College, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and the University. The position initiates and leads collaboration with library colleagues, academic administrators, teaching faculty, and teaching fellows in order to integrate into the curriculum opportunities for students to discover, critically evaluate, organize, synthesize, build upon, and ethically use information in diverse formats. Through these activities, it promotes the development of research fluency among Harvard’s undergraduate and graduate students and supports the creation, use, and dissemination of new knowledge by scholars and faculty.

 

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

·         Develops, participates in, and assesses teaching and outreach programs of the FAS libraries, emphasizing active learning and teaching from Harvard’s collections.

 

·         Serves as Library Liaison to one or more academic departments/programs in the Humanities, such as Romance Languages and Literatures and Comparative Literature. Routinely develops and delivers course-integrated research support, instruction, and research consultation.

 

·         As an embedded librarian, actively works to be part of the life of the department/s, including understanding and engaging with the curriculum, supporting scholarly communications needs in the department/program, and participating in their events and activities. May also serve as a secondary research contact in areas appropriate to background and expertise.

 

·         Participates in reference/virtual reference services and activities, including contributing to regular hours of reference service each week (including some nights and weekend rotations).; provides in-depth research consultations and interprets and resolves complex reference questions

 

·         Develops and conducts in-person and virtual tours and orientations for students, faculty and visiting faculty and international scholars and fellows in Harvard centers and programs

 

·         Works comfortably in a large research library environment and in a variety of university locations (e.g., classrooms, student residential settings, department offices, etc

 

·         Maintains current awareness of developing trends and investigates and adopts new findings and innovations in:

o    teaching and learning program development, assessment, pedagogical methods, learning materials, technologies that support and advance teaching and learning in the academic environment.

o    trends in publication and the dissemination of knowledge in the disciplines

·         Collaborates closely with archivists, curators, bibliographers and other library and museum colleagues in delivering research support and in teaching programs

·         Participates in developing library collections and collaborates with collection development colleagues in both identifying specific needs and, more generally, concerning programmatic developments and shifts

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:     May supervise support staff and/or student employees.

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

·         MLS from an ALA accredited graduate program, or equivalent

·         Advanced academic degree preferred

·         Fluency and/or reading and speaking knowledge of one or more Western European languages

·         3-5 years of reference or research services experience 

·         Experience working in a college/university library setting preferred

·         Knowledge of trends in digital scholarship and pedagogy and scholarly communication

·         Evidence of the effective application of technology in support of research and teaching

• Knowledge of scholarly resources in the Humanities

·         Knowledge of cultural studies, film studies, literary studies preferred

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

·         Ability to communicate well with faculty, staff and users at all levels and from diverse backgrounds

·         Knowledge of best practices and current methods in pedagogy and reference services.

·         Evidence of creativity, and imaginative approaches to work

·         Knowledge of current research practices and experience in the effective applications of technology in research and education

·         Ability to foster and participate in a team-based evironment

·         Adaptability, flexibility to work in an environment of constant change

·         Excellent critical thinking and high-level interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written).
